Isaiah 43:9
Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and shew us former things? let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth.
All nations are gathered and assembled and challenged to bring forward witnesses who can establish their claims about former things, or else to hear and acknowledge the truth. They are required to declare what is coming and show future things in order to prove deity, and no nation and none of their gods can do this. The challenge proves that He alone is God, that before Him no God was formed and none shall be after Him, that He alone declares and saves and shows, that beside Him there is no saviour, and that His power both declares and accomplishes what will come. The speaker is Jesus Christ speaking through Isaiah as the eternal self-existent one to whom past, present and future are alike, and His people are His chosen witnesses appointed to know and believe and understand that He is He. His people are therefore not to turn away from Him to seek wisdom from finite people or trust in human beings and human strength, but to trust and seek the wisdom of the Infinite One at their command.
Nations Called to Witness
All nations are gathered together and the peoples are assembled and challenged to bring forth their witnesses to establish their claims about former things, and if they cannot, to hear and acknowledge that it is truth. The gathering is a test of rival claims to knowledge and authority, exposing that human powers cannot match the Lord's knowledge. The challenge requires them not only to show former things but to declare what is coming and future things in order to prove deity. No nation can do this, and none of their gods can do this.
The speaker in this summons is Jesus Christ speaking through Isaiah, who saw Christ. He speaks as the eternal self-existent one, the I AM, which means an eternal presence to whom past, present, and future are alike. To Him the most remote past and the far distant future are as clearly seen as daily events.
Against the failure of the nations stands the office of the Lord's witnesses, who testify to His identity and power. His people are His chosen witnesses, appointed to know and believe and understand that He is He. He is He who existed before time began, who was before the day was, and whom none can hinder.
God Alone Declares and Saves
The courtroom test in the verse exposes that human powers cannot match the Lord's knowledge and authority, for the nations are challenged to produce witnesses and to show that they can declare what is coming or explain former things. Their inability to do so stands in contrast to the Lord's power both to declare and to accomplish what will come, confirming that He alone is God and Saviour. The challenge proves that before Him no God was formed and none shall be after Him, that He alone declares and saves and shows, and that beside Him there is no saviour. No nation and none of their gods can prove deity by declaring future things and showing former things, by bringing witnesses to justify their claims or else hearing and confessing the truth.
The verse belongs to Isaiah 41-45, where God very fully reveals His purpose for His people. These chapters are instruction from God Himself, not a call to turn from Him and seek wisdom from finite people. The chapter gives precious assurance that the Lord's word will be fulfilled, and that those who follow its promises will be where the Lord can do what He has promised.
The chapter foretells the work of presenting the warning message to the world and explaining the reasons for belief. Its prophecy will be fulfilled in the last days, when God's law is made void and His people are robbed and oppressed.
Trust Wisdom and Share Light
The gathering of the nations to bring witnesses and to show former things is a test that lays bare the inability of human powers to match the Lord's knowledge and authority, for He alone declares what will happen and there is no other God beside Him. The verse belongs to Isaiah 41-45, where God very fully reveals His purpose for His people, and those chapters are to be prayerfully studied as God's instruction for them. Its meaning is that God's people are not to turn away from Him to seek wisdom from finite men, but to trust and seek the wisdom of the Infinite One at their command. The chapter is a call to trust in the Lord alone and not in human beings or human strength, to repent earnestly, and to receive strength from the Lord who gives strength to His people.
The inability of the nations to establish their claims about former things stands in contrast to the Lord's power both to declare and to accomplish what will come, confirming that He alone is God and Saviour. That confrontation with evidence supports a public, urgent message that sets the proof before people and calls them to hear and acknowledge that it is truth. God's people are therefore to look to Jesus for spiritual knowledge, and not to hide the light under a bushel but to let it give light to all who are in the house. For God has given His Son as a light to open blind eyes and to bring prisoners out of darkness.
The verse depicts the man who keeps his mind free from the rubbish of evil influence that Satan would pile into it, and lays it open to the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness so that he can see God. Such seeing comes through a well-cultivated intellect and a well-disciplined character formed by standing in holy trust as God's steward. It requires guarding every avenue of the soul, using all entrusted faculties to reach the highest point of excellence, being faithful over little things and following the Lord's plan. It is fulfilled by faithfully planting and sowing and extending the vineyard given into his charge as a partaker of the divine nature.
