Jeremiah Watches Craftsmen Gild a Wooden Idolby emmanuel_higgins

Isaiah 44:13

The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.

Isaiah 44:13 stands within chapters that reveal God's purpose for His people. Their message warns against turning away from God's wisdom to rely on finite human wisdom. To trust human wisdom in place of divine wisdom is to abandon the purpose God has set forth for His people.

The verse describes a craftsman forming an image in the beautiful shape of a man so that it may remain in the house. With rule and line, with planes and compass, he marks and fits and shapes the work by his tools. That shaped image is then made an object of worship, so that people treat their own handiwork as gods. In this they misuse God's gifts to fashion idols instead of honoring the Creator who gave the gifts.

By contrast with such works of human hands, the verse points to the true God as the Maker of heaven and earth. The difference between an idol kept in a house and the Creator of all things is learned by studying God's works. The folly of treating images as able to deliver is exposed when, in times of danger, people carry about images of saints and beg them for protection. That superstition is encouraged when priests uphold it rather than turning minds to the living God.
