The Idol Maker Burns Half His Logby emmanuel_higgins

Isaiah 44:19

And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?

The verse lays bare the folly of taking wood shaped by human hands and then treating and worshiping what remains as a god. Set against such idols is the true God as the Maker of heaven and earth. He can be known through His works, and that knowledge lays a foundation for grasping the spiritual truths of Scripture.

In its place among chapters that reveal God's purpose for His people, the verse turns them to seek wisdom from God rather than turning to finite human beings for it. The same folly appears when images of saints are carried about and prayed to for deliverance from cholera. That practice was encouraged by priests.
