Isaiah 47:11

Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.

The verse pronounces divine judgment upon Babylon for its arrogance and cruelty, and its confident trust in its own wisdom and wickedness cannot prevent that judgment from falling. The evil and desolation will come upon Babylon suddenly and unexpectedly, with calamity arriving without foreseeing its source or its time. When the mischief falls, Babylon will be unable to escape it, avert it, or put it off, and the end is unexpected overthrow and desolation.
