Isaiah 47:9

But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

Babylon's stripping of strength and safety is portrayed as bereavement of offspring and the desolation of widowhood. That double bereavement was to strike in a single moment within one day, arriving suddenly and falling in full, perfect measure without mitigation. The cause was the multitude of her sorceries and the great abundance of her enchantments, joined to her general wickedness. It was also the fruit of her proud self-confidence that her deeds were unseen and that her throne could never fall.
