Isaiah 48:8

Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb.

Israel had not heard and had not known, for its ear was not opened from that time, even from the beginning. That unopened ear was not mere ignorance but stubborn resistance to warnings and instruction. Such refusal to listen and understand exposed a treacherous and rebellious character. God spoke in this way because He knew beforehand that Israel would deal very treacherously and was called a transgressor from the womb.

The same condition is found in those who have received repeated truth, instruction, and warnings yet refuse to listen and understand. They reject what God testifies concerning His work. They hinder that work through falsehood and heresy. They dismiss the words and warnings of the Spirit as worthless.
