Isaiah 5:13

Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.

God's people go into captivity because they have no knowledge of the Lord as revealed in His word. That want of knowledge is shown in misinterpreting and misapplying His revealed word and in despising it. It is also shown in failing to consider His works.

The famishing of the honourable men is hunger coming upon the leaders, and the drying up of the multitude with thirst is the people as a whole left thirsty. In its setting this captivity follows injustice and greed and pleasure-seeking that disregard God. The resulting judgment leaves costly homes and productive orchards desolate.
