Isaiah 5:9

In mine ears said the LORD of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.

Many houses, even great and fair ones, shall be left desolate and without inhabitant, laid in ruins. That laying waste will be the Lord's own act, which no human ingenuity can prevent. The judgment is upon greedily accumulating houses and land to oneself. Its setting is also one of pleasure-seeking and disregard for God.

It condemns those who make the grand houses they build for themselves their pride, and who pride themselves in scheming to obtain money to exalt self and to gain worldly honor. Those who persist in such lordly presumption will reach the limit of God's mercy, when He will no longer bear with them. Such men are a curse to humanity.

The warning is seen illustrated when costly homes in Southern California stand uninhabited and orchards are left ruined. Withheld rain belongs with this desolation.
