Isaiah 51:20

Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the LORD, the rebuke of thy God.

Jerusalem's sons have fainted and lie helpless at the head of every street, like a wild bull entangled in a net. They are overwhelmed by and filled with the fury of the Lord and the rebuke of God. Yet the chapter to which this desolation belongs is to be read with assurance and hope. It is precious because it presents God as bearing human burdens, even bearing His people's burdens.

Together with Isaiah 52 and Isaiah 53, this chapter shows that God has furnished fallen, sinful man with a life-giving Saviour. That Saviour is revealed as man's only hope of a life that measures with the life of God. The chapter therefore gives assurance and hope in tedious, painful affliction. It shows that Jesus looks upon the sufferer and bears all burdens. By grace He strengthens the afflicted to keep working and helping others, so that suffering is endured without murmuring for the glory of God.
