Isaiah 52:4
For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause. For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.
The verse recalls that God's people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there as temporary residents, and that the Assyrian oppressed them without cause. In its immediate setting this remembrance stands within God's call for Zion to awake, to put on strength and beautiful garments, to shake off the dust, to arise and be loosed from captivity as those redeemed without money. In its broader setting it belongs to a prophecy of Zion's restoration and of Jerusalem's comfort and redemption, in which God's salvation is revealed worldwide and His people are redeemed and restored.
As part of the prophecies of Christ's work in Isaiah 52, 53 and 54, it is to be studied as a help and a blessing to God's people. Together with Isaiah 51 and Isaiah 53, it shows that God has provided fallen, sinful humanity a life-giving Saviour who is the only hope of a life that measures with the life of God.
These chapters apply to the time when the liberty of Christ's church is endangered and the church faces oppression that looks like victory for transgressors of the Sabbath and rejoicing for evildoers. For that time they promise God's victory for His people and call for true missionary work in public ministry and house-to-house labor, carried out in an aroused, wholehearted, united and selfless way in the power of the Spirit through the grace of Christ.
The verse portrays the happiness and overcoming grace revealed in families where unity and peace and love abide, where peaceful homes that honor the Lord serve as symbols of the purity of the heavenly home.
