Isaiah 52:6
Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I. Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.
Therefore my people shall know my name in the day of their scattering, for the exile of disobedient Judah among the nations of the earth served a kind purpose that they would come to know His name and recognize that He is the one speaking. That knowing would come as they learned obedience and trust for themselves in exile. In their places of exile they would also give others a knowledge of the living God, so that many among the nations would learn to love Him as Creator and Redeemer.
Many strangers would begin to keep His holy Sabbath day as a memorial of His creative power. When He bared His holy arm to free His people from captivity, all the ends of the earth would see His salvation. Many converts from heathenism who yielded to Him and kept His law would not be separated from His people but would be numbered among spiritual Israel, His church on earth, and would join Israel on the return to Judea. When He delivers His oppressed people they know who He is and recognize that He is the one speaking, and this recognition answers the blasphemy against His name and makes His presence and authority known. This knowing of His name and recognizing that He is the one speaking, present and acting for them, belongs with the assurance that the Lord reigns and brings good news to Zion.
Together with Isaiah 51 and Isaiah 53, this chapter shows that He has furnished fallen, sinful humanity a life-giving Saviour, who is the only hope of a life that measures with the life of God. As part of the prophecies regarding Christ's work in Isaiah 52-54 that are to be studied for help and blessing, the promise encourages His people in the day when the liberty of Christ's church is endangered and oppression by transgressors looks like victory. It calls for true missionary work in public ministry and house-to-house labor, wholehearted earnest faithful work with selfishness removed, wide-awake watchmen who arouse others, and workers seeing eye to eye in unity and restored confidence. It looks to the revealing of the arm of the Lord whose power was seen in the life of Christ through the grace of Christ, so that the truth for this time is proclaimed clearly in neglected cities in the power of the Spirit and His people have victory without discouragement.
His people know His name and know that it is He who speaks when He marks every self-sacrificing effort they put forth, lets His blessing rest on them as they do their very best, and gives them the testimony that their ways please Him. He works through the educational centers and mission fields they establish by freewill gifts, so that His salvation is seen and His message goes to all parts of the world before the eyes of all nations. The promise shows where the Lord wants His people to be, seeing eye to eye, with every soul coming into harmony. In the appointed day they will know His name and recognize that He is the one speaking and present with them, and this knowledge belongs with the honor of being adopted into His family and calling Him Father. When restored to His presence they will know His name and recognize Him as the one who speaks to them, and in the life to come God Himself will teach them, as He did at the beginning.
