Isaiah 52:7
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!
The messenger's feet are called beautiful because they carry a saving announcement of peace, good news and deliverance, crowned by the declaration to Zion that God reigns. It belongs to the Lord's comforting and redeeming of Jerusalem, when the watchmen lift their voices together in joyful unity and His saving power is openly displayed to all nations to the ends of the earth. That good news is the gospel of Christ, the life-giving Saviour furnished to fallen humanity, who saves fully all who believe and makes men and women sons and daughters of God. It is carried worldwide by Christ's people through the Holy Spirit, with sent preachers and missionaries needed so people may hear, believe, call on the Lord and be saved, proclaiming God's mercy with the speed of an angel bearing the everlasting gospel. The tidings are made beautiful when presented in a courteous, pleasant and inviting manner revealing Christ's love, and they are fulfilled where unity, peace and love abide in the church and in the home as the watchmen see eye to eye.
Words and Historical Setting
The feet are called beautiful not for themselves but because they carry a saving announcement of peace, good news, and salvation. That announcement is addressed to Zion, telling of peace, good tidings, and salvation, with its heart and crown in the declaration that God reigns. It is to be proclaimed plainly and earnestly from Scripture.
Its setting is the Lord's restoration of Jerusalem, when He comforts His people and redeems them. Then the watchmen lift their voices together in joyful and united song, seeing eye to eye when the Lord brings back Zion. In that restoration He lays bare His saving power before all, so that His salvation is made known to the nations and seen to the ends of the earth.
The verse stands with the prophetic message of Isaiah 48, 51, 52, 58 and 60, and more broadly of Isaiah 50-58 and 52-54, concerning Christ's work given to help and bless His people. Those chapters are to be studied, kept in mind, and heeded. They call for receiving God's instruction faithfully, warning people of the truth lest souls be left unwarned, and doing God's work in plain, determined, soul-winning labor that seeks the Lord without raising doubts about what He is doing or agitating non-vital questions that divide.
Salvation It Announces
The beauty in the verse lies in the announcement itself, for the good news carried to the mountains is the gospel of Christ, and that gospel saves to the uttermost all who believe. Loving deeds prepare the heart and open the way for people to receive the living Word, and where that Word is received barrenness gives place to joy and new life, so that desolate places rejoice and blossom. Teaching those who do not yet know God's grace and goodness and mercy is part of that same beautiful work, for those who proclaim Christ bring tidings of peace and salvation and announce to Zion that God reigns. Their labor belongs with the joy of Jerusalem, because God comforts His people and redeems them through Christ, and in that redemption His salvation is made known to all nations.
The verse stands within the wider revelation that God has furnished fallen, sinful humanity with a life-giving Saviour. That Saviour is man's only hope of a life that measures with the life of God, a hope fulfilled when Jesus clothed His divinity with humanity to stand at the head of humanity and enable men and women to become sons and daughters of God. The central word of the announcement to Zion is that God reigns, bringing peace and good news, and that reign is made known as the Lord reveals Himself and speaks to His people. That proclamation belongs with the joyful, united song of the watchmen when the Lord restores Zion. To bear such tidings is an honored work, for the preaching of the word is sacred labor for the salvation of souls, announcing peace and salvation and declaring that God reigns, and those who preach it are laborers together with God.
Prophecy and Fulfillment
The verse is part of a prophecy that God's people in the last days will fulfill as they come into harmony and see eye to eye. The feet of the one who brings good news of peace and salvation to Zion are beautiful, and the heart of that message is the announcement that God reigns. That messenger is sent by God in the last days to prepare a people for the day of the Lord.
The prophecies of Isaiah 52-54 regarding Christ's work were given to help and bless His people. When the liberty of the church of Christ is endangered and oppression by transgressors of the Sabbath threatens, they call for true missionary work in public ministry and house-to-house labor, proclaiming the truth for this time in clear, distinct lines and in the power of the Spirit. Wholehearted work of that kind manifests the efficacy of the grace of Christ, and it requires the watchmen on the walls of Zion to be wide-awake and to arouse others. It separates all selfishness from the lives of God's people and brings His workers to see eye to eye. It reveals the arm of the Lord whose power was seen in the life of Christ, and it restores confidence and brings unity in the churches.
Watchmen on the mountains proclaim that the Bridegroom is near and at hand. They call the heirs of glory to go out to meet Him as He comes with clear hallelujahs and rejoicing. The marriage feast is waiting with its gates standing wide open.
Carrying the Message Worldwide
The worldwide carrying of the message belongs to Christ's people, who through the Holy Spirit represent God's benevolence, bear witness to Christ, and bring His invitation and mercy to the world. They take a worldwide message of peace and salvation across the mountains, and wherever they go Christ is present with them through the ministry of holy angels and the teaching of the Holy Ghost. Sent preachers are needed to tell people about Christ, so that they may hear and believe and call on the Lord and be saved.
The commission is to proclaim God's saving mercy to the world with the speed and directness of an angel flying through heaven with the everlasting gospel. Medical missionary service is one appointed means of making God's benevolence known and rescuing people from ruin. The bringing of good tidings is beautiful upon the mountains when the messenger presents the rich fruit of truth in a courteous, pleasant, inviting manner that makes it desirable so that people receive it. That beauty is seen when messengers reveal Christ's love and work earnestly for sinners, presenting the gospel as God's word of life and salvation. Harsh, forbidding, fierce, and condemnatory words, attitude, and spirit mar its influence and turn people away, so the bearer must have a converted heart and tongue filled with Christ's grace and teach truth the way Christ taught it.
Publishing peace and salvation and proclaiming that God reigns includes establishing schools and educational centers and sending trained workers to all parts of the world. Its beautiful feet are missionaries going to foreign fields where they do not know the language, learning the language, teaching building and planting, carrying on the work intelligently, and educating converts away from national prejudice. The message is to go everywhere and the work to stand in its highest beauty so that God's salvation is seen by all nations. This work is supported by self-sacrificing effort and large freewill gifts rather than borrowing, and it does not come without effort but requires everyone to act his appointed part.
The good news is carried by workers who publicly present Scripture, including the call to keep God's Sabbaths, leading people to hear and obey. It is to be proclaimed plainly and earnestly as the great present subject of God's commandments, with plain, determined soul-winning labor in seeking the Lord and doing His work. That labor furnishes enemies with no questioning doubts about what God is doing and agitates no non-vital questions that cause division. Evangelistic work carries good news of peace and salvation announcing that God reigns, to share heaven's light and grace, bring people to salvation, and prepare the way for God's everlasting kingdom. Faithful witnesses bring the truth to people still sitting in darkness, where they can rejoice to carry this good news onward to others.
Canvassers serve as the Lord's messengers by bringing the glad tidings of salvation through Christ to people in darkness and error who might otherwise never hear it, going in the Lord's name. They also act as watchmen warning a sleeping world and churches that do not recognize their time of visitation. Their message joins salvation through Christ with obedience to God's law. Leaders and those serving in institutions are urged to study and heed the prophetic message as a call to receive God's instruction faithfully and to warn people about the truth, since neglecting this duty leaves souls unwarned.
Unity, Homes, and Daily Life
The verse pictures the happiness and overcoming grace that appear when unity and love abide in the church and among God's people. Its good news of peace and salvation proclaims that God reigns in Zion, bringing joy to those who receive it. That proclamation of God's reign belongs together with the unity of His people, when the watchmen lift their voices together and see eye to eye as the Lord restores Zion.
The bringing of good tidings and the publishing of peace and salvation, with the declaration that God reigns, describe families where unity and peace and love abide. Such peaceful homes reveal happiness and overcoming grace, honor the Lord, and stand as symbols of the purity of the heavenly home.
To publish peace is to proclaim truth and to labor to preserve unity and peace in the church. That is the work of watchmen and gospel teachers and ministers, whose beautiful bringing of good news helps keep God's people united in love.
God's people are to live each day as in His sight, becoming messengers of peace to those who need Him. In the little time remaining they are to receive light and wisdom from God for souls in error, with a faith that increases by exercise, so that God's purpose for them is realized. The proclamation of good news, peace, salvation, and God's rule in Zion is reflected in the call for His faithful watchmen to shine spiritual light and for the gospel to be preached to the poor.
