Isaiah 52:8
Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion. Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion.
When the Lord brings again Zion, its watchmen lift up the voice together and sing together, for they see eye to eye in shared vision and united praise and witness to His restoration. This bringing again belongs with the proclamation of good tidings and salvation, the announcement that God reigns, His comfort and redemption of Jerusalem, and the revelation of His salvation to all nations in a worldwide triumph of the gospel. To see eye to eye means to understand alike and share unity of faith, being of one mind and judgment and speaking the same things in united witness rather than division, as one in Christ. God's watchmen must therefore lift up the voice and sing together in united, harmonious presentation of truth, and when united they see spiritual things clearly and sound a clearer and louder warning of coming danger. This unity is reached by earnestly seeking the Lord and submitting the will wholly to His will, looking to Him as Teacher and Guide with converted hearts, and in its fullest fulfillment it becomes direct, joyful communion with Christ with no veil between.
Restoration Song and Context
When the Lord restores Zion and brings it back, its watchmen raise their voices as one and sing as one, because they see eye to eye. Their shared sight becomes shared witness to what he has done in restoring his people. Their united rejoicing and united praise belong to that restoration itself.
That restoration stands together with the proclamation of good tidings and salvation and with the announcement that God reigns and speaks to his people. It brings comfort to God's people through his comfort and redemption of Jerusalem, while his salvation is made visible to and seen by all nations. In that setting it points to the worldwide proclamation of the gospel and its triumph bringing glory to God and the Lamb.
The chapter provides for fallen, sinful humanity a life-giving Saviour as the only hope of a life that measures with the life of God. The watchmen's song in Isaiah 52:7-10 belongs with the call for those who carry the Lord's message to be clean.
Promised Unity of Faith
To see eye to eye is to understand alike and share unity of faith, with every soul brought into harmony as of one mind and judgment. When the Lord restores Zion in the last days its watchmen will be united in religious belief rather than divided, speaking the same things with the same judgment and giving a clear, shared witness. Though temperaments and dispositions differ, those who truly understand will be one in Christ Jesus. This unity centers on agreement in the solemn truths for the time, into which the Lord brings His people together as they are united in faith and understanding. Jesus and His angels work to unite them in those truths while Satan works to divide them, and above all now they are to trust the Lord as helper and God with all things in His hands. As the end draws near the Lord's watchmen must be wide awake and united in what they see and proclaim.
In 1844 prayer for God's guidance brought believers to a common understanding of truth and to rejoicing agreement when the Lord restores Zion, without dissension, hostility, suspicion, or misjudgment. When differences later arose, prayer and searching the Scriptures again brought light so that all could understand the truth together and be brought into unity by it. Watchmen on the mountains lift up their voices together in song to proclaim that the Bridegroom is near and coming. They call the heirs of glory with clear hallelujahs to go out to meet Him and to rise up, because the marriage feast waits with its gates standing wide open and the Bridegroom is at hand. In its fullest fulfilment the words describe the redeemed's direct, joyful communion with Christ in heaven, with no veil between them as they share the kingdom and its fullness of joy.
How Unity Is Reached
Co-workers who do not yet see matters rightly can learn to see eye to eye, and in that shared understanding they avoid serious mistakes by earnestly seeking the Lord and submitting their wills wholly to his will. To see eye to eye is to look to God for guidance and wisdom, recognizing him as Teacher and Guide and pleading with him to teach how to carry the work solidly and in correct lines. That unity comes through converted hearts and minds, humble submission to his counsel, and willingness to blend differing convictions in seeking the right course, not through talk alone or by insisting on one's own plans.
Ministers and leaders come to that agreement through open investigation, shared counsel, and prayer, so that they can present a united message and keep the people from confusion and division. In the church, members preserve this seeing eye to eye by guarding their speech, refusing to spread harmful reports, and treating one another with love. Such oneness of mind and judgment is brought about through a clear, pointed, living testimony in the church.
When work for God is wholehearted, earnest, and faithful, it separates selfishness from life, and then workers come into full agreement and unity. With selfishness removed, confidence is restored, decided changes are made, and the Lord's power as seen in the life of Christ is revealed among them. Watchmen on the walls of Zion are thus to be wide-awake themselves and to arouse others, lifting up the voice together as the Lord brings again Zion.
United Proclamation and Warning
God's watchmen must lift up the voice and sing together because they see eye to eye when the Lord brings again Zion, which means ministers are to be united and harmonious in presenting truth. They are to bring a courteous and pleasant spirit into the work rather than harsh, forbidding, fierce, condemnatory words and attitudes that wield truth as a scourge. They are to present the rich treasures and beautiful fruit of the Word as Christ taught it, with a converted heart and converted tongue filled with converting grace, so that people accept the fruit instead of turning from it and the Lord is glorified.
Lifting the voice is proclaiming the present truth for the time, showing people where they stand in prophetic history and awakening the world to the value of religious liberty. It belongs with Isaiah chapters 48, 51, 52, 58 and 60 that should stir souls and be carried in mind, joining the call to make the commandments of God the great subject now and to give the testing truth for this time straight and plain with clear voice to reach souls in unwarned cities. It urges seeking the Lord and working the works essential to be done for saving souls, while refusing non-vital questions that cause division and furnish enemies with questioning doubts. It is God's watchmen lifting their voices to call people to come out from among the world, separate themselves, and avoid what is unclean.
When Christ's followers are united they see spiritual things clearly, and Zion's watchmen raise their voices together in united witness. Their united vision enables them to recognize the coming danger to God's people, even the coming sword, and to alert the people. Because spiritual sight enables them to recognize the danger facing God's people, they sound the warning more clearly and loudly.
Watchmen rising and speaking with united voices in a clear, decisive message was meant to advance the message that went forth from the Minneapolis meeting so that the people would take up their duties. Resistance and blindness hindered that work and delayed the time when the strong light of the angel from heaven would fill the earth with glory.
The expected time when God's people will see eye to eye and speak together in unity is still future, pointing to coming agreement among believers. That expectation is not justification for making disputed views public in opposition to the faith taught together. Making disputed views prominent and setting them against the faith held by the community risks division and harm rather than advancing truth.
Unity in Life and Mission
The verse portrays the happiness and overcoming grace revealed where unity and peace and love abide, with watchmen lifting up the voice together and singing together because they see eye to eye. In families this unity is the picture held up, for peaceful homes where love abides honor the Lord and are symbols of the purity of the heavenly home. In the church the same singing together shows the grace revealed when its members are united in love at the Lord's restoring of Zion. Such unity among Christians is unity with Christ.
God's people are to stand as a united company in their work, brought into agreement so that their voices join in song. Their harmony gives God opportunity to work, and then His salvation is revealed on the right hand and on the left. Living in peace and striving for unity as members of the royal King brings God's blessing as on Solomon's temple and prepares them to join in praising the Lamb. A teacher of truth shows this seeing eye to eye by being in agreement with Christ.
In establishing and managing schools, at home and in foreign countries, this standing united and seeing eye to eye under the Lord's guidance is what allows God's salvation to be revealed. The bringing again of Zion is God's work standing in its highest beauty while His message goes to all parts of the world and His salvation is seen before the eyes of all nations. That seeing eye to eye comes when trained workers are sent to foreign missions even where they do not know the language.
There they learn the language and teach building and planting and intelligent labor, and educate away national prejudice, while educational centers are established to prepare them. This is sustained by self-sacrificing effort and by large freewill gifts given straight into the treasury rather than by dependence on large borrowed sums. Everyone must act his appointed part and do his very best, with the testimony that his ways please God, looking to be rewarded according as his work shall be.
