Isaiah 54:15

Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.

Any gathering against God's people is not by God and is without His commission, and whoever gathers together against them shall fall for their sake and shall not prevail. The promise stands that they are established in righteousness that is from the Lord, are put far from oppression and terror so they need not fear, that no weapon formed against them shall prosper, that every tongue rising against them in judgment shall be condemned, and that this vindication is the heritage of the servants of the Lord. The words are given as reassurance amid danger, with Christ offering to bear their burdens. Isaiah 54 is prophecy about Christ's work given to help and bless His people, and the gathering is an attempt to oppress Christ's church and endanger its liberty.

That oppression will look like a great victory for Sabbath transgressors and will cause rejoicing among evildoers, yet it should not discourage God's people because God has victory for them. The assurance belongs to those who are a distinct, separate, and peculiar people standing under Christ's banner and consecrated to God under His everlasting covenant. The protection belongs to those who receive Christ as the heaven-sent teacher and feast on the Word by belief in Him, which is essential to spiritual life, and those who so feast never hunger, never thirst, and never desire any higher good.

The verse stands under conditions that must be met, requiring hungering and thirsting for righteousness, putting away everything foolish that distracts attention from God, loosening grasp on the world, and teaching children the way of the Lord. In the last days of this earth's history the verse belongs to the call to do a precious and extended work for salvation, joined with Isaiah 55 and Isaiah 58. Believers must not only sit in churches Sabbath after Sabbath listening to preaching but must work intelligently with God by visiting friends, neighbors, and families, planting the Word of God, dealing out the bread of life to hungering souls, creating interest in present truth, and lifting up Christ before the world.

While opponents gather, God's people are called to carry forward their work in faith and humble dependence on Him. In that time of opposition they are to do true missionary work in public ministry and house-to-house labor, arousing from sleep and doing their God-given work in clear lines and in the power of the Spirit. Watchmen are to be wide-awake, selfishness is to be put away, unity and confidence are to be restored, and the efficacy of Christ's grace and the arm of the Lord are to be seen as in the life of Christ.
