Isaiah 55:5

Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the LORD thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee.

Behold, the one addressed is God's glorified Davidic Messiah, given as witness, leader and commander to the peoples, who shall call nations that knew him not and they shall run unto him. They come not by his own power but because of the Lord his God and the Holy One of Israel who has glorified him, for the gathering is God's own work joined to that promised leader. Those whom God has glorified are likewise to call those who know them not and carry his invitation far beyond Israel to Gentiles and peoples far away. The promise stands within God's everlasting covenant and gracious invitation to all who seek him wholeheartedly to receive freely his life-giving Word, life, mercy and abundant pardon upon meeting the conditions of salvation. Therefore all who have seen Christ crucified are called by the Holy Spirit not to sit idle in church but to serve actively as ministers of righteousness, opening every place possible, reaching nearby cities, friends, neighbors and many others, lifting up Christ and giving what the Lord has given them with full assurance that angels will impress minds.

Nations Gathered to God

The one called to summon is the glorified Davidic Messiah to come, given as witness and leader and commander to the peoples, who will call a nation he did not know and nations that did not know him will run to him. The promise reaches beyond Israel to nations previously unknown to Israel and not knowing Israel, who will come to Israel because of the Lord and the Holy One of Israel who has glorified Israel. The same calling rests also on God's glorified people, who are to call those who do not know them and to work outward beyond homes and churches to bring the truth to those who do not know it.

People and nations who did not know God will be gathered to the one God has glorified, drawn by the Lord God and the Holy One of Israel, and will run to him. That gathering carries God's invitation beyond Israel, including to Gentiles and to people far away. Their coming is because of the Lord God and the Holy One of Israel who has glorified the one addressed, so that their response is grounded in his glory and the ingathering is God's own work. It is promised as what God will do when his people meet his conditions, and it stands joined to the promise of a leader and witness for the people.

The calling of unfamiliar nations stands within God's promise of an everlasting covenant, made with all who seek him wholeheartedly and meet the conditions of salvation. It belongs with his invitation to receive freely the life-giving Word, and with his freely offered life and mercy and abundant pardon to all who need them and come to him.

Sharing the Call Widely

God's people are not to sit in church while others do the work, but each is to serve actively as a minister of righteousness when his people meet his conditions. The promise that nations who do not know them will be called and drawn to them because of the Lord and the Holy One of Israel who has glorified them belongs to encouragement for a large work to open every place possible and reach people in nearby cities. The truth is to be taken to friends, neighbors and many others, beyond homes and churches, to help people grasp eternal realities and lift up Christ before the world. This extended soul-winning work of ministering to neighbors and helping people turn to Christ is joined to the promise that nations will come to God.

God's glorifying opens understanding, with the Bible as educator to be studied faithfully and carried out. Nations who did not know God's people come to them because of the Lord and the Holy One of Israel who has glorified them, as seen in people from foreign countries who came to the Washington camp meeting to receive what the workers could share and take it back with them. All who have seen Christ crucified are called through the Holy Spirit to represent God's kindness and carry to the world his invitation and message of mercy, bringing his message to nations that do not know him so that hearers receive life and enter his everlasting covenant.

The chapter speaks to all in responsible positions and forbids any worker to consider himself above fellow workers because greater responsibilities rest on his branch of the work. Leaders are to seek like Daniel for power from God alone, to represent not self and selfish fraudulent practices but the truth in righteousness, and to have no vestige of pride or self-importance. They are to be weighed with wisdom from God, to represent the sacredness of the work, to magnify the truth, and to present the holy perfume of Christ's character. This is the sacred fire of God's own kindling, while anything aside from it is strange fire abhorrent to God and more offensive as position involves larger responsibilities.

Isaiah 50-58, in which the verse stands, must be studied by God's people and especially by those in high positions carrying great responsibilities. Those chapters carry the Lord's reproof for disregarding great light and for accepting only chosen words without thorough work. Had the light been received and followed on to know the Lord, souls who have not heard the reasons of faith would have heard them ere now, and neglect of the duty to warn God's people to understand what is truth will meet judgment from the Lord. The chapters will be understood when the same reformation comes that makes Isaiah 60-61 understood, putting away complaining and evil working so the Lord appears to the conviction and conversion of souls.

Isaiah 55, 56, 57 and 58 are to be diligently studied by pastors and people to arouse them from spiritual stupidity. The verse calls those in the cities who profess present truth to wake up and give to others what the Lord has given them. They are to arise and shine because their light is come, and to see God's glory as they give the precious light of the gospel message. They go forth with full assurance that angels of God will make impressions on the minds of those for whom they labor.

The verse is part of the most solemn and most gracious call ever given to human beings and must not be neglected. It calls for controlled thoughts and for sanctification of mind and character by the Holy Spirit, producing a sanctified influence with words under Christ's control who gave his life and is near when called upon. It is to be kept in memory when going out and when coming in. It opens a door to meet with God, to seek him earnestly in meekness and humility with humbled heart in right relation to him, and he will be found.

The verse belongs with the message of Isaiah 58:1-5 showing God's people their transgression, with the Sabbath instruction of Exodus 31:12-18, and with the call to righteousness in Isaiah 56. It confronts those who seek God daily and delight in knowing his ways and in ceremony and fasting, yet retain selfishness, injustice, oppression and unhumbled hearts. It exposes lack of repentance, faith, love, grace and the Holy Spirit in those who then charge God with neglecting them.
