Isaiah 56:12
Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant. Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.
Isaiah 56:12 belongs with Isaiah 55 and 56 and 58, which apply to present experience and show that time is passing rapidly while many do not understand what needs to be done in right lines. Together with Isaiah 55 and 58 it is a call to arouse to give the last note of warning to save a perishing world. It is part of the chapters that those in positions of responsibility need to study because they have disregarded reproofs and failed to receive and follow the light given to them, and it is part of the warning calling for repentance and reformation.
The verse expresses the boastful, careless presumption that tomorrow shall be as today and much more abundant, claiming there is no danger and no need to be disturbed in order to justify continuing in pleasure and excess. That boast represents worldly complacency and dismissal of warnings about the Lord's coming, so that while people expect continued prosperity and delay, sudden destruction comes upon them. The verse applies to those absorbed in making themselves rich, who forget that they are God's servants and assume they can keep prospering without regard for him.
It is the language of lovers of pleasure intent on amusement and money makers seeking wealth, and of skepticism and so-called science that has undermined faith in the Bible, gladly accepting error and fable in order to pursue self-indulgence without alarm and striving not to retain God in knowledge. It is spoken by those taught that the second coming of Christ is only spiritual, who have discarded his literal appearing in the clouds of heaven, have no interest in the prophetic figures tracing down history, and denounce the message that Christ is at the door as fanaticism and heresy while asking where the promise of his coming is. That unbelief and godless pleasure continue until the shout of the archangel and the trump of God are heard at his literal return, when the fatal deception is broken and they are weighed in the balance and found wanting.
The verse shows the words and spirit of those who refuse the invitation to get ready for the marriage supper, holding to farms and merchandise and the things of this life because they fear losing worldly interests and becoming poor and suffering want. Such people forget that he who cares for sparrows and clothes the lilies cares for the humble trusting soul, guides all who are ready to do his will, and gives what is needed to his dear children. Those who through patience and perseverance overcome will instead receive a crown of never-fading glory, a robe of righteousness, and entrance into the beautiful city of God.
