Isaiah 57:10

Thou art wearied in the greatness of thy way; yet saidst thou not, There is no hope: thou hast found the life of thine hand; therefore thou wast not grieved.

The verse pictures people worn down by pushing hard along their own great way and course, wearied in the greatness of it yet pressing on. Though exhausted, they will not say there is no hope and will not admit their efforts are hopeless. They have found the life of their hand, strength and advantage in what they have made or gained by their own efforts, enough to keep them going. Because of that supposed sufficiency they are not grieved and do not turn back. In this the verse exposes the stubbornness of those who depart from right principles.

The class described has been afraid and has feared men rather than God, has lied, and has not remembered God nor laid Him to heart. They declare their own righteousness and works, which shall not profit them. Worldly wealth does not increase a person's value before God. When they cry out, it is to their companies, which cannot deliver them but shall all be carried away by wind as vanity. Their course of action has grieved the Lord and has grieved His people.

Yet the Lord has compassion on them, and if they will humble their hearts and confess and forsake their sins He will not leave them to become the sport of Satan's temptations. He who puts his trust in Him shall possess the land and inherit His holy mountain. The high and lofty One who inhabits eternity dwells in the high and holy place with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit, acknowledging and honoring the meek and contrite to revive the spirit of the humble and the heart of the contrite ones, preparing the way and taking the stumbling block out of the way of His people. The chapter calls for careful, prayerful study. Its wider call applies to neglected people who need missionaries, and those who repent and do what is right can be healed and restored to God's favor.

The verse foretells the present great and solemn work of presenting the warning message to the world, telling people why this faith is held and giving them the information they desire, with camp meetings as the appointed opportunity for doing it. The verse stands in a whole field of comfort and encouragement as an open door where a person can enter and meet with God, where God can be sought earnestly and will be found.
