Isaiah 58:8
Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward. Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.
Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health spring forth speedily, with righteousness before and glory behind, is promised only when God's chosen fast is kept in loosing wickedness, freeing the oppressed, feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, clothing the naked, and caring for one's own flesh. It does not belong to mere afflicting of the soul with outward ceremony and fasting for strife, but requires heart work in repentance, forsaking sin, putting away selfishness, oppression, and accusing speech. The breaking light is spiritual dawn after darkness, the glory of God shining through His church in good works, words of truth, and deeds of holiness that lead others to believe. The speedy health is a new endowment of physical, mental, and spiritual power from heaven, for doing good is God's chosen remedy for disease of body and mind. The righteousness going before is not the worker's own but Christ Himself as front guard, imputed by faith and seen in obedient, Christlike character, while the glory as rereward is God Himself guarding behind as fortress, Guide, and Redeemer. The promise belongs with honoring the seventh-day Sabbath and repairing the breach in God's law, as part of the third angel's message to be proclaimed with power in the last period of earth's history.
Fast God Requires
The light breaking forth as morning, health springing forth speedily, righteousness going before, the glory of the Lord guarding behind as rear guard, and answered prayer are given only when the fast God has chosen is kept. That chosen fast is to loose the bands of wickedness, undo heavy burdens, let the oppressed go free, break every yoke, deal bread to the hungry, bring the homeless poor and cast-out into the house, cover the naked, and not hide from one's own flesh and kindred or neglect duty to them. Those who practice that mercy and justice and take on extra work to help others show true connection with Christ and may rely on the promise, for their merciful conduct brings God's favor, dawning light, quick healing, righteousness leading the way, and the Lord's glory guarding behind. The whole fifty-eighth chapter is of the highest importance and defines the work for today, with the promise following the removal of oppression and care for the hungry, poor, and afflicted.
The promise does not belong to merely afflicting the soul, bowing with sackcloth and ashes, outward ceremony and bodily humiliation, fasting for strife and debate, or fasting and prayer while the heart is estranged, self-enriching, selfish, oppressive, self-confident, self-exalted, and fault-finding and while mercy and love for God and others are neglected. It requires heart work, humbling the heart before God, repentance, confession, forsaking sin, humility, and practical godliness and Bible religion rather than mere profession and zeal in a false faith, for a claimed connection with God is shown only by works of righteousness and doing justice and mercy in the purest principles of the kingdom. Money must be turned from useless ornaments and gratification of taste for frivolous things into channels that glorify God, and oppression, judging and accusing speech, the pointing of the finger, and speaking vanity must be put away, with the following promise that when oppression and accusatory speech are removed and the hungry are cared for and the afflicted satisfied, God answers the call, light shines in darkness, and He guides and sustains. When these hindrances are put away and kindness to the needy is practiced, the breaking light, speedy health, leading righteousness, and guarding glory give evidence that the Spirit of God is operating on the heart, a direct warning and encouragement to be repeated over and over, belonging with building up what has been broken down in God's law and honoring His Sabbath.
The blessings come when people cease to be self-centered and to brood over their own troubles, afflictions, and ailments and turn to serve others in Christ's way, remembering that others exist in the world. Forgetting self in interest for others and comforting others with received comfort brings dawning light and speedy health as double health, both bodily health and spiritual health and power, spiritual sinew and muscle, with renewed spiritual strength as well as physical well-being, done together with God and engaging the interest of heaven so blessing returns to the giver. Those who complain they are not blessed while continuing in unbelief and sinful indulgence instead of heeding Christ's words do not receive it.
Light Breaking Forth
The breaking forth of light as the morning is spiritual dawn after darkness, bringing continual guidance, satisfaction in drought, strength of body, and life like a watered garden and an unfailing spring whose waters never fail, with the pledge to those who call that God will answer, Here am I. It is the fruit of faith in Jesus as personal Saviour who pardons sin and keeps from sin, a faith that works by love and purifies the soul from selfishness, in which faith and works are combined, for faith without works is dead. When wicked bonds are loosed, heavy burdens undone, the oppressed freed, every yoke broken, food given to the hungry, the homeless poor sheltered, the naked clothed, and duty to family not evaded, then light dawns and health and spiritual life are quickly restored. That promise is a precious assurance to those who minister in His name and receive from God in order to impart to others, serving as impartial and unselfish witnesses who remove prejudice instead of creating it, study the life of Christ constantly and labor as He labored, and go to teach and preach Christ and instruct all who do not know His grace, goodness, and mercy. It holds life and light, goodness and truth for all who receive its warning and apply it to their lives, bringing a satisfaction and peace created by the Lord in the soul that is worth more than gold, with every faithful duty registered in the books of heaven for more than an earthly reward, as a sacred duty to receive His grace in order to give it to others. It belongs to every church member, every family, and every soul in every family, to be claimed by beginning right where they are, each person individually taking hold of the blessing by doing good works and passing it on to others, while all that heaven contains waits to supply every laborer with true sympathy with Christ and the fellowship of the Spirit. Even believers who excuse themselves from helping others because of poor health find that forgetting self in care for others is an excellent remedy for disease of body and mind, bringing speedy restoration.
That light is the glory of God shining through His church as it lifts the bowed down and comforts those who mourn, the light of the Sun of Righteousness seen in good works, words of truth, deeds of holiness, cheerful sunny Christianity, and hallowed influence that causes believers to shine as lights so that many more believe in Christ. When people humble themselves and bring Christ into their experience under His converting power every moment, His righteousness covers them and goes before them and the glory of the Lord guards them behind as refuge, and their light breaks forth as cheerful sunny Christianity that represents Christ, carries the light of Jesus to neighbors, and talks of redemption as the disciples did after being with Jesus. Loving one another unlocks the hardest hearts, brings health and spiritual life quickly, and lets God stand with His people so that even a worm can thresh a mountain. When God's people serve those who most need help, overcome selfishness, and carry out the appointed work of compassion, their light shines clearly before the world through living faith and godly example, and their labor is attended by blessing and power. Light and enlarged understanding come by working for souls in the darkness of error with knowledge already received from the Word, for those who try to teach others while depending on the grace of Christ and searching the Scriptures as diligent students gain knowledge of the Word by practice. Being doers of the Word in the appointed missionary work of sympathetically caring for physical necessities and then presenting present truth brings the Holy Spirit close to every worker and kindles the love of God in the ministering soul, and the Spirit cooperates with human effort to arouse the moral powers and awaken the mental powers so that men in the depths of degradation are rescued and saved.
The light is given to bring many out of the darkness of error into the light of present truth, and it must shine without limit in every city and village, in highways and byways, near and far, and in regions beyond, with the whole world regarded as the field. When believers fit themselves to work for the Master, the truth goes forth brightly as a burning lamp, and the chapter that promises this should be read over many times, giving a deeper impression each time. It is not sitting in churches Sabbath after Sabbath listening to preaching while ministers hover about believers repeating the same truths, but each believer having light in himself and letting it shine where he is, in lay work in the neighborhood, visiting families, creating an interest in the truth for this time, planting the Word in hearts, dealing out the bread of life to hungering souls, lifting up Christ, preaching Christ and Him crucified, and laboring in simplicity to minister the word of truth. Those arrayed in Christ's righteousness and sanctified by truth go forth to labor for all classes with equal care, free from selfishness, sowing seed in good works that benefit those without the light, proclaiming mercy as laborers together with Christ and using their talents for God's glory, so that unbelievers see good works and glorify God. If every believer were a living missionary, the message for this time would speedily be proclaimed in all countries to every people and nation and tongue before Christ comes in power and great glory, for lack of faith, spirituality, and divine power hinders the coming of the kingdom. If they go forth to do Christ's work, angels open the way before them and prepare hearts to receive the gospel, and news of such compassion goes before the workers as it did before Jesus, whose pathway was marked at every step by mercy, healing, and happiness. The light reaches the world through practical ministry that joins proclaiming the truth with relieving distressed families, ministering warmly and self-sacrificingly to the needy, and especially helping those who suffer for accepting the truth, and when this is done in faith and humble dependence upon God the blessing of God rests upon the workers and the salvation of God is revealed in the conversion of souls and the advancement of His work.
Health Springing Speedily
Health springing forth speedily is constantly receiving a new endowment of physical, mental, and spiritual power from heaven's inexhaustible supplies at the command of all who consecrate body, soul, and spirit to unselfish service. Christ gives such workers the breath of His own Spirit and the life of His own life, and the Holy Spirit puts forth its highest energies to work in heart and mind. That working brings health to the body, vigor to the intellect, and joy to the soul, with spiritual light dawning and health quickly restored. It is the reward for practical self-sacrificing benevolence toward the poor, the suffering, the unfortunate, the hungry, the naked, and the oppressed, in loosing wicked bands, undoing heavy burdens, letting the oppressed go free, and breaking every yoke, giving the giver happiness and health of soul and body. It is a healthy, growing experience for those who abide in Christ by feeding on the bread of life and carrying out their individual part as workers together with God, whose righteousness becomes evident wherever they go and turns sinners to the Lord.
Doing good in this way is God's chosen prescription and excellent remedy for disease of body and mind, more useful than drugs for chronic disease of the soul that weakens the whole being. When selfish spending on useless ornaments and selfish wants is stopped, and bread is given to the hungry, the homeless poor are housed, the naked are clothed, burdens are lifted, the oppressed are freed, and family duties are not neglected, then light dawns, health returns quickly, a righteous character goes ahead, and guarding protection follows behind. If the sick themselves feed the hungry, bring the homeless poor into the house, and clothe the naked, spiritual light will dawn for them and bodily health will quickly return. This healing comes as people use muscles as well as minds and exercise physical and mental powers equally in active, useful employment, including outdoor work with pure air instead of shutting themselves indoors in overheated rooms, casting weakness upon Christ and imparting love, gratitude, and comfort to others rather than constantly requiring sympathy or excusing themselves as too sick and feeble to help. The calling and its attending blessings of light, health, righteousness, and protection belong to all who faithfully do the work God gives them according to their opportunities.
The same promise holds the reviving and healing light of the coming morning for those who await the Lord and live in hope of the soon-coming morning. It directs them to lasting joy and reward, infinite bliss and boundless joy, mansions Christ has gone to prepare, an immortal inheritance with clear title never to be questioned for those who love God and keep His commandments, everlasting life for those who by faith take God at His Word, and a kingdom possessed forever and ever by those who by faith now enter and hold fast their profession. Putting these principles into practice brings healthfulness of soul and a sunshiny experience, with hearts opened to Jesus and filled with the sunshine of His righteousness. As a healing message it offers hope and encouragement to discouraged people that light will break forth and health spring up. Without consecration, separation from love of the world with its passing fashion, and surrender of influence and substance to God, the promise is lost and the life becomes like a withered branch, while those who endure receive the fashion of the world to come that endures forever.
Righteousness Going Before
Thy righteousness going before thee is not thine own righteousness but Christ Himself going ahead as the believer's righteousness, light, truth, and front guard. It is the light of the righteousness of Christ and the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ given when the precepts of the law are put into practice in the works of mercy and necessity of the true fast — loosing wicked bonds, lifting heavy burdens, freeing the oppressed, breaking every yoke, feeding the hungry, housing the poor, clothing the naked, and not hiding from needy kin. As workers help the needy, lift the fallen, and encourage the faint-hearted, they follow where He has led and marked out the path, doing Christ's works in His way rather than their own, and become His helping hand in living connection with Him. This blessing comes to those who forget self and take unselfish interest in others by carrying on the same work of relieving suffering, need, and oppression that Christ did on earth, studying the record of His life and carrying out the principles He gave, loving God with all heart, soul, strength, and mind and loving neighbor as self. He forgives transgressions, so past mistakes need not stop faith and prayer.
That righteousness is imputed when sin is taken away after repentance for transgressing God's law, filling the vacuum left by sin with God's blessing. It is received by hanging on the merits of the crucified and risen Saviour through faith as personal Saviour, bringing conformity to God's will and obedience to His law, and the blessings God gives in it are free gifts, not rewards earned by human merit. It clothes the believer as a robe from Christ and wedding garment that prepares for the coming conflict over God's commandments, when the test comes with Christ's righteousness going before the faithful and the glory of the Lord as rereward guarding behind. This provision matters more than outward dress, genius, or eloquence, simplifies all the movements of the religious life while elevating the receiver, never degrading anyone or making a son or daughter of God rough, unkind, or uncourteous, and prepares the way for every emergency with discernment to know temptation when it comes even though disguised as an angel of light. The promise belongs to those diligently working, earnestly praying, making progress, and diffusing light amid moral darkness, and it means divine aid and the ministry of heavenly agencies, with angels imparting divine inspiration, breaking and opening the way before workers and preparing hearts for the gospel message, so workers rely on divine aid and are filled with hope, never thinking of and much less speaking of failure.
The same righteousness is seen and developed in a life reflecting Jesus Christ's character, shown in righteous words, actions, rightdoing, righteous actions, and useful work, while the Lord's glory behind keeps and preserves as strength and protection. It is a well-ordered life and godly conversation, pure correct action according to the Ten Commandments, and patient continuous effort to form a godly character, fulfilled in the transformed life and influence for good of those who serve others unselfishly when truth sanctifies and transforms character. Health springing forth speedily is connected with this, in using physical and mental powers together and in reflecting light by speaking words of comfort, encouragement, and uplift without placing yokes upon others. Its teaching calls for justice and truth and for work that lifts the oppressed and strengthens the weak, including through practical training for labor, and for doing all in one's power to relieve physical and spiritual distress with the sympathy and compassion for fellow men like the sympathy and love that led Christ to redeem humanity at the cost of His life-blood. Such consistent holy lives reveal God's glory as witness to present truth that calls people from darkness into light, with a righteousness that represents the character of Christ.
In a variant order the same guarding is described with God's salvation, righteousness, and glory going before His people while His protection and righteousness guard behind. God imparts and gives righteousness to those who yield their hearts and minds to His control and are led by the Spirit, and this protection accompanies faithful work in seeking souls, teaching the truth, and living it out, so that such work prospers and workers who practice Bible truth gain respect. Those who choose the Lord's side and pursue reform, temperance, and daily self-denial will see His salvation, with the Lord's glory going before them. A light emanates from every one who makes God and His Word counselor and follows it, teaching and training children for the future immortal life and forming a character fit to be accounted worthy to unite with the holy heavenly family and to enter the gates of the city of God when they are thrown back for the nations that have kept the truth, and when families live rightly the Lord's glory surrounding them is linked to parents and children receiving the softening, subduing influence of the Spirit of God and living in ways that glorify Him.
Glory As Rearguard
The glory of the Lord as rereward means God Himself stands behind His people as rear guard, fortress, strength, Guide, Helper, and Redeemer. When His righteousness goes before them, His glory protects and follows behind, preparing the way ahead, opening hearts through the ministry of heavenly angels, and replenishing mind and heart with grace and wisdom. He makes the feeblest strong, lightens heavy burdens, comforts the oppressed, and brings refreshment to all who let His grace flow through them to others.
That guarding presence belongs to those who serve God acceptably and obtain Christ's righteousness, with righteousness and truth going before them. It rests upon the Christian physician who speaks truth and works faithfully for Christ, and upon all who follow divine counsel by using God-given abilities under His discipline with a right spirit. It is seen where the Health Retreat is served by directing people to Jesus rather than seeking praise or personal influence, and where truth is sown and the soul is faithfully served. Possessing that righteousness is part of God's work in building human character.
The guarding glory belongs to those who keep their eyes open to Christ's righteousness, yield to His leading, live uprightly, govern lips and thoughts, and proclaim truth with faith and meekness rather than ridicule or self-reliance. Cherishing truth and living so as to bring peace and care to others causes its light to shine to those outside, and then the Lord answers when they call. Those who faithfully seek to save willing hearers, who lead others to the truth and teach patients still young in understanding, are assured that righteousness will go before them and glory will guard them behind, so they need not be discouraged by opposition even from others in the church. As they do their part and persevere in humble work for the needy, Christ acknowledges their efforts and adds His blessing, and though the work may not appear encouraging at first, His help and direction emerge like the morning and He continues to work. Those who practice fraud like phrenology for telling about marriages and hearing confessions, who close their eyes to Christ's righteousness or dishonor God in their work, do not know or display that glory and should stop and seek forgiveness, for the promise belongs to the higher work of instructing people in the Word that transforms character, overcomes hereditary and cultivated tendencies, and proclaims the third angel's message before Christ's soon coming.
Sabbath and Final Message
The promised breaking light, speedy health, leading righteousness and guarding glory belong together with honoring the seventh-day Sabbath as God's memorial and sign of His creative and sanctifying work. They are given to those who refuse to trample the Sabbath, who turn away from Sabbath-breaking, who find delight in the Lord, and who on His day set aside their own pleasure, their own words and their own ways. Those who keep it in this way repair the breach made in God's law by the man of sin who exalted a spurious Sabbath, build up the old waste places, and restore paths to dwell in, and by such worship their names are written in heaven. The blessing comes when genuine medical missionary work of beneficence is bound up inseparably with keeping the commandments, for rightly performed this ministry restores the moral image of God in man, brings souls to conversion under divine power, and prepares others for the Lord's coming by supporting workers with means to carry truth to new places and build places of worship, and the nearer the end the more urgent this united work becomes.
The verse stands as part of the third angel's message and the warning for the last period of earth's history, to be fulfilled in the present time. It joins practical care for the poor and sick and ministry to suffering humanity with bringing the light of truth before a perishing world, with the gospel ministry given no inferior place and the soul's spiritual needs kept central, for God has united these two lines and no man should separate them. In that setting the Sabbath truth, with the second coming, is to be proclaimed with a loud voice, not gradually or by beating about the bush but clearly, distinctly, earnestly and decidedly, with trumpet certainty especially at camp meetings, under the Holy Spirit's power. The chapter lifts that trumpet voice to show God's people their transgression and departure from His ordinances, to press what truth is and what pure and undefiled religion requires of eternal realities, to call straying churches to heartfelt repentance, true faithfulness and obedience as the basis of peace, and to pledge light, healing, leading righteousness and the Lord's protection behind, with defense amid last-day fear and upheaval and refuge when oppressed for honoring the true Sabbath against the spurious Sunday.
The whole fifty-eighth chapter is of the highest importance, defining the work for today, specifying honest dealing and cleansing of work, and opening the eyes of sincere seekers to understand God's law. It is present truth and the highest education, giving the terms of salvation and the knowledge after the divine similitude of Christ's teaching, which alone with all book learning makes a student truly educated for present and eternal good. It is to be read many times, read and practiced, believed and practiced, taken home and studied in the home and obeyed in giving children right instruction, so that families are fitted for the salvation of their children instead of giving them an example contrary to the Word, with the promise that when they call the Lord answers and when they cry He says Here I am, and with prayers that show His direction and are heard and answered. It also depicts the nation's present condition and the reason for its calamity, while identifying the blessings that follow the appointed work: light breaking forth like morning, health springing quickly, righteousness going ahead, and the Lord's glory guarding behind, faithfully fulfilled when His requirements are followed.
United Work Applied
Practical care for suffering people and bringing the light of truth to the world are joined lines that no one is to separate, for the chapter joins them together and its light and healing follow relieving oppression, sharing with the needy, and caring for the afflicted as described in Isaiah 58:6-12. That united work is medical missionary work bound up with keeping the commandments, to be carried out throughout the vineyard and especially in neglected places, bringing light where there is darkness and restoration to those in need, and the nearer the end the more urgent it becomes. It is a ministry of feeding the hungry and helping sufferers that brings life to the churches and carries the gospel forward through both generous giving and labor. Its principles are what patients are to see practiced in sanitariums and in medical missionary work, where accepted truth is lived out through practical Christlike service in justice, mercy, and truth, preserving its sacred influence and shining as light in the world. Students are to be prepared for this required work of caring for the sick by learning to use nature's simple remedies under the direction of Jesus.
The promise guides specific enterprises when they are done for soul-saving and God's glory, calling churches, publishing houses, mission stations, and sanitariums to heart reformation, putting away every self-exalting plan, learning from Christ, and taking up restoring the breach and paths to dwell in. Those who have means are to help the Lord's work and supply the needs of sanitariums where the sick are healed and medical missionaries are trained, rather than spending all effort merely in commercial lines, laying up treasure beside the throne, and such blessing moves hearers, including those restored from hopeless disease by careful treatment, to give or lend freely to sustain that work. Church members are to give direct care to orphans, the poor, and the aged rather than leaving that responsibility to others, making sacrifices and using care and skill to make the sick and poor comfortable, and this obedience brings the blessing promised in the chapter. The same order includes evangelistic labor in all cities and wise temperance work at camp meetings to reach all classes, especially the higher classes, bringing converts to see saloons closed and ending the dealing out of poisoned liquor that creates madness and bloodshed. God's instruction also includes practical care for needy children by helping them find homes where they will be cared for.
Dawning light, speedy health, leading righteousness, guarding glory, answered prayer, guidance, satisfaction, and refreshment are pledged to every faithful laborer who receives from God to impart, with rich blessings ever reacting back upon those who make efforts to bless others. Light, swift healing, righteousness, and the Lord's glory accompany the service described in the chapter, which is not selfish ease but follows Christ's pattern of self-denial and loving care, a constant work of righteousness with God's glory guarding behind. Heeding the admonition to care for the afflicted brings light breaking forth as the morning and health springing forth speedily, with health and peace found in doing the heavenly Father's will, and calls Christians to repent of half-hearted work, redeem the time, and represent pure unselfish benevolence and Christ's reconciling character. The chapter marks out the Lord's way as practical godliness through justice, mercy, and the principles of God's kingdom, not mere profession or zeal in a false faith. That promise applies to present experience and shows what needs to be done in right lines as time rapidly passes.
When God leads a person His righteousness goes before and His glory is the protection and guidance behind, and this is true for students who make God their counselor, seek the Holy Spirit's guidance, and pursue purity and holiness, so that they are led by God and influence others toward what is right. Health can be preserved through sensible living, and sanitariums are established to provide proper education in health. The chapter gives comfort and encouragement and shows an open door to enter and meet with God where earnest seekers will find Him, calling for the meekness Christ lived, humbling the heart before God and standing in right relation to Him.
