Isaiah 59:13
In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood. In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.
The verse describes rebellion as transgressing and lying against the Lord, departing away from God, speaking oppression and revolt, and conceiving and uttering words of falsehood from the heart. In its setting in Isaiah 59:1-15 it exposes the present condition of the nation and explains the reason for its calamity. It means the people forsook and forgot God, chose other gods, and followed their own corrupt ways until God turned from them. It means they trampled upon God's law and broke His everlasting covenant, which was given on condition of obedience, by continual transgression. This breaking of the covenant includes despising the Sabbath.
It describes the character of the Jewish priests and rabbis in the time of Christ, who in transgressing and lying against the Lord and departing from God spoke oppression and revolt and uttered falsehood from the heart. They misled many who were convinced Jesus was the Son of God by false reasoning, repeating prophecies of the Messiah's glory and then making contemptuous comparisons between that glory and the humble appearance of Jesus, thus perverting the very words of prophecy to sanction error. It describes the moral condition of the people at Christ's first coming as part of a wider collapse in which justice and truth had fallen. The chapter is a prophecy of the state of the world just prior to the second coming of the Lord, when the same kind of iniquity will characterize the world and show the end of all things is at hand.
At that time the world comes more and more under the sway of seducing spirits as men turn away from God and His righteous government, while men professing godliness indulge their own traits of character and become self-indulgent and self-centered unless conscientiously under the control of God. It describes the sinful condition of the world today, which is likened to the corruption of Noah's day. Those who seek wisdom, praise, and glory from people rather than truth and righteousness must repent and be converted.
