Isaiah 59:5
They hatch cockatrice’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper. They hatch cockatrice’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.
Isaiah 59:1-15 sets forth the dreadful present sinful condition of the nation and the cause of its calamity. The condition is forsaking and forgetting God, choosing other gods and following corrupt ways until God has turned away from the people. At the same time the inhabitants of the earth trample upon the law of God and break His everlasting covenant, with despising of the Sabbath belonging to that same rebellion.
The same words describe the character of the Jewish priests and rabbis in the time of Christ. By false reasoning they misled even those who were convinced that Jesus was the Son of God, perverting the very words of prophecy to sanction error. Instead of leading the people to study the word sincerely for themselves, they held them in unbelief.
The chapter is also a prophecy of the end of all things and of the state of the world just prior to the second coming, when iniquity abounds. That abounding iniquity comes through continual transgression of the law and breaking of the everlasting covenant, which was given on condition of obedience. As men turn from God and His righteous government the world comes more and more under the sway of seducing spirits, and even those professing godliness indulge their own traits of character and become self-indulgent and self-centered unless conscientiously under the control of God. Therefore deep humility is called for on the part of God's people, with each one examining whether he is prepared for the day of God and able to stand the trying test.
