Isaiah 62:1

For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth.

For Zion's sake and for Jerusalem's sake the speaker will not keep silent and will not rest until its righteousness shines out brightly and its salvation burns like a lamp. The brightness and the burning lamp mean righteousness and salvation made openly visible, so that the Gentiles see righteousness and kings see glory and God's name is exalted among the nations. This is Isaiah's testimony about Christ, who prays and works without ceasing for Zion and Jerusalem, his obedient commandment-keeping people, for their triumph and the salvation of the Gentiles. The burning lamp is the truth going forth, Bible truth preached and practiced, the message of Christ's righteousness, his soon coming, and the third angel's last message of mercy and warning to a perishing world. Therefore God's people are not to hold their peace or rest but to carry on aggressive, unceasing activity, waking from indifference and reaching from families outward to others in darkness while time is short.

Words Images Setting

For Zion's sake and for Jerusalem's sake there is no holding peace and no resting until its righteousness goes forth as brightness and its salvation as a lamp that burneth, an unceasing resolve to speak and to work until righteousness shines brightly and salvation is plainly visible like a burning lamp and flaming torch. The resolve not to keep silent and not to rest means the Lord will not cease speaking or working for Zion and Jerusalem until their righteousness shines openly. That testimony is Isaiah's testimony about Christ.

The brightness and the burning lamp mean righteousness and salvation made openly and publicly visible, shining out as bright light so as to be seen by others. The Gentiles shall see that righteousness and all kings that glory, and by this shining God's name is exalted among the nations. This open manifestation is grounds for faith, courage, and assurance rather than dwelling on discouragement, for Zion's light and glory will be seen by the nations. The call not to rest is a call to persist in proclaiming the light until righteousness is openly seen, waking up and answering through active witness. The light was to reach the world through God's people, for had the Jews shown the fruit of self-denial, mercy, compassion, love for God, and obedience, many would have been converted and glorified God, whereas their neglect contributed to the darkness of the Gentile world, and the promise belongs to a plan of redemption embracing the whole world.

What follows is open vindication in which the Gentiles see righteousness and kings see glory, a new name given by the mouth of the Lord, exaltation as a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord and a royal diadem in the hand of God. No longer termed Forsaken and Desolate, the people shall be called Hephzibah and the land Beulah, because the Lord delights in them and the land shall be married. Christ values His obedient people as His jewels, unlike the world's valuing by money, houses, and land, and He regards them as precious and saves them as His flock like crown stones set as a crown of glory in His hand. This brightness is fulfilled when the Redeemer works mightily by His Spirit and brings deliverance to His people, calling for praise, thanksgiving, and offerings of gratitude so His work may go forward with power.

The promise belongs to a time of general departure from truth and righteousness, when the work is to build the old waste places, raise up the foundation of many generations, and restore the old paths. In that setting God's people are not to hold their peace or rest but to carry on aggressive gospel work, holding firmly the banner of truth and proclaiming the law of God connected with the faith of Jesus until righteousness and salvation go forth as brightness and as a burning lamp before the world. The shining forth includes being called the repairer of the breach by turning from Sabbath-breaking to calling the Sabbath a delight and honoring God.

In its chapter setting, watchmen are set upon Jerusalem's walls who never hold peace day nor night, and those who mention the Lord keep not silence and give Him no rest till He establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth. The way is prepared by going through the gates, casting up the highway, gathering out the stones and lifting up a standard for the people. Salvation is proclaimed to the daughter of Zion to the end of the world, that salvation comes with reward and work before Him, and they shall be called the holy people, the redeemed of the Lord, sought out, a city not forsaken. The following prophecy presents Christ as the righteous and mighty Savior who has trodden the winepress alone, shed His blood, and comes to redeem His people and execute judgment.

Christ Prophetic Fulfillment

Isaiah's testimony in this verse is about Christ, defining his work as bringing righteousness and salvation to Zion and Jerusalem until they shine like brightness and a burning lamp, and he will not cease or rest until this is accomplished. It shows God's purpose that his name shall be exalted among all nations through the shining forth of righteousness and salvation seen by the Gentiles with kings beholding glory. The whole chapter is a representation of the work Christ will carry out through those who follow his example, to be the experience of those who hold fast the beginning of their confidence firm unto the end.

Christ prays without ceasing for Zion until its righteousness shines brightly and its salvation is visible like a burning lamp, interceding for the triumph of his people including the salvation of the Gentiles. His unceasing work is for Zion and Jerusalem, meaning his people who obey his commandments, until their righteousness shines out as brightness and their salvation as a burning lamp before Gentiles and kings, until they are called by a new name named by the mouth of the Lord and become a crown of glory and royal diadem in the hand of God. Unlike the world, which values a man by money, houses, and land, Christ values his obedient people as his jewels. God regards his people as precious jewels and saves them as his flock, like stones in a crown, and will not cease speaking or rest until Zion's righteousness shines brightly, its salvation burns like a lamp, the nations see its righteousness and glory, and God gives it a new name and makes it a crown of glory in his hand.

The promise belongs to sacred truths entrusted to God's people for the world and was spoken concerning Jerusalem, with the law and the gospel entrusted to be presented to the whole world, but the hope of a glorious Messiah was wrongly applied to a temporal prince and temporal ruler. This misreading kept many from recognizing Jesus when he came in humility as prophecy had declared concerning his first coming.

The verse is fulfilled when the Redeemer works mightily by his Spirit and brings deliverance to his people, as at the General Conference, calling for praise, thanksgiving, and offerings of gratitude so his work may go forward with power. Then the brightness means the Gentiles and all kings see the righteousness and glory given by God, his people receive a new name from the mouth of the Lord, they become a crown of glory and royal diadem in the hand of God, and they are no more called Forsaken nor their land Desolate but are called Hephzibah and Beulah because the Lord delights in them and their land is married. The Lord persistently works for Zion until her righteousness and salvation shine openly like light for nations and kings to see.

A mighty work is to be done in which the Gentiles are gathered in, and not the Gentiles only but the Jews, under a plan of redemption embracing the whole world. Many among the Jews everywhere will be converted when the light of present truth is brought to them to accept, coming to the light, receiving it, and proclaiming the immutability and unchanging law of God with wonderful power, and through them God will work and do wonderful things in righteousness until salvation goes forth as brightness and as a burning lamp. Had the Jews shown the fruit of self-denial, mercy, compassion, love for God, and obedience, many would have been converted and glorified God, but their neglect instead contributed to the darkness of the Gentile world. The messages given to John on the barren coast of Patmos, when his voice could no longer testify in person to the One he loved and served, would go forth as a burning lamp carrying the truth outward and declaring God's sure purpose not only for the Jewish nation but for every nation on earth.

Righteousness Salvation Revealed

The shining forth is the experience of repentant people forgiven and clothed in righteousness, whose past accusations do not cancel restoration. It belongs to those who hold fast the beginning of their confidence firm unto the end, as the refusal to hold peace or rest continues until righteousness goes forth as brightness and salvation burns as a lamp. That brightness becomes visible when people trust fully and humble their hearts, so that working for their good also brings glory to the divine name and exalts that name among all nations.

The burning lamp is Bible truth to be both preached and practiced, with every ray of light given shining forth with clear distinct brightness. It is the message of Christ's righteousness proclaimed in the simplicity of Christ with converting power, the message of Christ's soon coming, the third angel's message, the last message of mercy and warning to a perishing world to be proclaimed from one end of the earth to the other to souls in darkness. That message is sacred, precious, glorious and infallible, sounding with certainty and going forth with power as the Spirit works in human hearts to turn souls from idols to God. It includes mysteries into which angels desired to look and which prophets and kings and righteous men desired to know, now to be made known through the church and carried especially into the cities rather than confined to one place.

The cause and word are sure, unchangeable, sacred and infinite, and it is as certain that God's people have the truth as that God lives. Even when ministers who preached with zeal and earnestness apostatize and join enemies, and evil men and evil angels unite against everyone seeking to join, with Satan trying to recover his prey and trying his utmost to make the word of none effect, the foundation stands sure. Satan invents every device he can to prevent the light spreading into new places and to hinder the work, yet with all his arts and hellish power he cannot change the truth of God into a lie.

As divine truth is exalted it becomes clearer and clearer, and understanding of it grows more and still more fully. Its light reveals righteousness and salvation when the Spirit works on human minds. That work produces a much higher standard in speech, in ministry, and in spirituality, refreshing members by the waters of life and leading laborers under the one Head to reveal their Master in word, in spirit, and in every form of ministry. It brings a healthful increase of unity and love that testifies to the world that God sent His Son for redemption, with pruning of the vine to bring forth much fruit while branches that do not bear the precious fruit of the Spirit in Christlike words and deeds are cut off.

The law and the gospel were entrusted to God's people to be presented to the whole world and to all nations, so that Gentiles and kings see righteousness and glory shining brightly like a burning lamp. Earnest study of the sacred infinite word, with Christians seeking their light from it and then going forth in faith to give that light to those in darkness, reveals truth, exposes sin and wrong so they are not sustained, and vindicates God's law as all are invited to the fullest investigation of its claims. In a time of general departure from truth and righteousness this shining includes building the old waste places and raising the foundation of many generations by being called the repairer of the breach, turning from Sabbath-breaking to calling the Sabbath a delight and honoring God. It therefore warns those who trample the Sabbath commandment by keeping the first day of the week that they cannot expect in rebellion to enter through the gates into the city, while the lamp of salvation put on with the whole armor and the gospel shoes is kept at work for the lost from place to place even in wicked cities to win many souls.

Preparation for Bright Shining

Isaiah 62, together with chapters 60-61 and 63-65, speaks decisively to leaders and to people with responsibilities. It calls for an end to complaining and evil work, for putting away evil, and for wholehearted consecration to God. When its words are accepted there follows reformation with cleansing and purification, and the Lord shows His power in conviction and conversion of souls.

The bright going forth of salvation depends on clearing the King's highway by taking out stumbling-blocks, rubbish and stones and refusing to cover even one sin. Selfish and unconverted practices must be cleansed from God's institutions, and a needed reformation with cleansing and purification must take place, so that the Spirit can move among His people. Then unity, truth and righteousness emerge and the message of warning goes forth like a burning lamp.

The light shines when God's people commune with God to be imbued with His Spirit, walk and talk with Him individually, keep the mind ever directed to Him, and take daily time for prayer to consult Him and seek His blessing. They are to cling to infinite power without faint-heartedness and without trust in self, precede every action with humble earnest prayer, seek the Lord wholeheartedly, honor those who have labored faithfully, and love God supremely and neighbors as themselves. In that consecration of heart and mind and soul to His service and obedience to His commands, work is done with exactitude, service becomes complete as a perfect ministry, truth is magnified, wondrous things are done for truth's sake so His name is glorified, and grace received is bestowed on those in need beginning in families and then reaching beyond to others wandering in darkness.

Every hindrance to Christian growth must be put away: careless indifference, indolence, cold selfish worldly practices, spiritual declension for gain with thoughts running in worldly channels, self-indulgence and objectionable traits of character. When the mind is worked by the Holy Spirit and hindrances are removed, hearts filled with light from above shed light wherever they go upon those in darkness. By the Spirit's refining work with daily renewal of grace, God's people receive the richest blessing, know when to speak a timely word, and climb step by step up the ladder of perfection higher and higher in the way that leads to heaven, to holiness and to God, which they need now because severe trial is coming very soon.

When those who have much and great light walk in accordance with that light, their minds are filled with high and holy thoughts, their hearts with pure and sacred meditations, and the great plan becomes the theme of their conversation. In gratitude for Christ's sacrifice they give themselves to God, work in His lines, and serve with consecrated heart, mind and soul. So kindled by God they become fishers of men shedding light wherever they are, others see God's salvation through their steadfast witness, and by continuing steadfast unto the end they are granted an abundant entrance through the pearly gates into the heavenly city.

Unceasing Worldwide Proclamation

For Zion's sake there is to be no silence and no rest until righteousness shines as brightness and salvation as a burning lamp, and this means aggressive, unceasing gospel activity in a time of general departure from truth and righteousness. Believers are to wake up and shake off careless indifference and take up the long-neglected work, first in families and then beyond families to others in need, communing with God to be imbued with His Spirit and then bestowing received grace on those in darkness. Hundreds of servants are to take the field as earnest soul-saving workers, live men filled with the vivifying influence of the Spirit, coming to the help of the Lord against the mighty, seeing God as Supreme Ruler and receiving abundant proof of fulfilled promises, hot and fervent with love and not lukewarm. Soul-saving to prepare a people for the coming of the Lord is the work most needing to be done, and no commercial enterprise or business interest may come between workers and this work or absorb time and talents, for time is short, worldly things will soon perish, and the enemy magnifies lesser matters to make the urgent work seem light. This shining is needed because darkness has covered the earth and gross darkness the people, with many far from Christ wandering in the wilderness of sin as strangers from the covenant of promise, and the banner of truth with the law of God connected with the faith of Jesus is to be held firmly until righteousness and salvation go forth openly before the world.

Money and means belonging to God must not be withheld and centralized where facilities are already multiplied while the vineyard lies barren and souls starve. They are to be used where help is needed to multiply laborers, scatter the seeds of truth widely, enter destitute regions and warn those in darkness, so that Gentiles see righteousness and kings see glory and the people become a crown of glory in God's hand. When missionary work is done in a wise and economical way, schools and houses of worship are built, whole neighborhoods are converted, a church is raised up, tithes are paid, the poor are looked after and helped, souls are converted, and from that center light spreads to enlighten other places. Truth going forth as brightness and as a burning lamp means the cause strengthened and broadened when means are employed under counsel of faithful servants to establish truth in new fields and build up the cause in new localities by establishing small centers and entering new territory instead of centralizing in one place. For Nashville and the Southern field this requires a work not built on the same foundation as Battle Creek, because Christian missions are of God and not of men, with every dollar wisely and economically used for missions far and near, repentance for extravagant spending on self, encouragement of workers, faithful stewardship, and those entrusted with goods and with accumulated knowledge and light awakening to trade upon God's goods to carry the work forward. This advance through united gospel and medical missionary work in cities and places where the warning message has not yet come requires means, with donations called for as emergencies arise and gifts and offerings drawn upon to plant the small gospel seed in unworked fields, provide facilities for reaping the now-ripe harvest, and do now in many unworked cities in America, greatly in the South and in New York City and in Washington, what ought to have been done.

The Lord calls men of high and low degree from every rank to do His bidding and enter His service so that righteousness and salvation in the truth go forth as brightness like a burning lamp in active public proclamation. Not many mighty and not many noble are called, yet God chooses some from the highest ranks on whom heaven's light shines so they adorn the truth by practice, as with Daniel and Isaiah of royal birth. He also calls others from lowly places, as David called from the sheepfold to the throne, Amos the herdsman, Zechariah the captive from Babylon, and Elisha the plowman.

Unlike earlier advocates of Bible truth who had to work secretly under threat of destruction and death, those publishing truth can now raise the Bible standard openly, and the lamp burns as truth goes forth through publications. God's design in establishing the publishing house at Battle Creek was for light to shine forth from it like a burning lamp, which requires holding the publishing work as sacred and keeping it pure, a duty repeatedly set before managers. To lose true understanding and consent to print papers and books containing dangerous errors is to join the force of the enemy and be spiritually asleep, failing to see the evil influence of erroneous sentiments on typesetters, proof-readers, and all others engaged in printing such matter. The image of truth going forth as a burning lamp applies to canvassing, with workers to carry the message of truth from family to family so people may be enlightened, urgently and without displacement by commercial enterprises or lesser concerns, including evangelist-canvassers and students preparing to serve and sowers and reapers working while opportunity remains before time for work is gone. The truth laid out before God's people for nearly half a century under ministration of the Holy Spirit, standing in truth and righteousness, is to shine brightly as a burning lamp amid perils of the last days and therefore must be guarded from specious errors and taught to students preparing for medical missionary work only by those true and loyal to that faith, with diligent circulation of literature, faithful work marked by Christian politeness in many missionary lines, and putting away of indolence and indifference like converted men and women so the real meaning of higher education is clearly understood.

Truth is magnified and goes forth with bright burning power and stands before the world in the strength God designs when a work of reformation is carried on in medical institutions, with physicians, workers, and nurses realizing they are on probation for this life and eternal life and stretching every faculty, nerve, and muscle to bring saving truths to suffering people in connection with healing the sick. This happens when sanitarium workers walk and talk with God individually, keep minds ever directed to Him, and take daily time for prayer to consult with God and seek His blessing, so each does work with exactitude and shines as a light, the sacred influence of the gospel appears in all its preciousness, God does wondrous things for truth's sake that His name may be glorified, while the worker drawn away from communion loses spiritual power. Head physicians have ministerial duties beyond medical work and are to answer calls for soul-winning efforts, living and laboring as those who trust and fear God and depend on His power, using influence for God so light goes forth. Salvation goes forth from medical missionary work as a burning lamp when the one connected with it gives God the glory instead of receiving glory to self, exalting self, and following own judgment, for walking humbly with God brings continually increasing skill and understanding and great honor as God's chosen physician, but management directly contrary to heaven's expressed will dishonors God before the world, angels, and men, so God no longer owns such a one as His physician.

The refusal to rest applies urgently to Washington, that above all places the capital hear the message and establish a memorial letting light shine from the seat of government where Satan works mightily. In Greater New York the startling truths of the advent message are to go forth as a burning lamp with the power of God, with God raising up laborers and His angels going before them, calling for those with experience to take up and carry forward the work there and in other large American cities and calling for means to be used. Though large cities have become as wicked as the world before the flood and as Sodom, many honest souls in them will listen and feel conviction of the Spirit, and New York is ready to be worked. The same burning-lamp going forth applies to cities of the East, to neglected cities in America and throughout the world where people live in darkness and need the gospel and knowledge of Christ, to Sydney, San Francisco and Oakland, Utica and Buffalo, and towns around Cooranbong, and to Nashville where refusing influence from words and sentiments not in harmony with the Lord clears the King's highway for Southern work to advance. In Nashville wise labor among teachers and students of schools founded for the colored race, with young men joining as students then laboring wisely and judiciously to sow seeds of truth, will cause people of precious talents there once converted to radiate light throughout the South. Everywhere the last testing message is to be carried with convincing power to honest souls, raising laborers, with angels going before and the Spirit poured out, so thousands hear, the blind see salvation, opposers become helpers, and the work becomes self-sustaining by blended forces giving time and means.

The burning lamp is the living message fresh from the throne of glory, the saving truth and everlasting gospel entrusted to God's people, and a message from the Lord will make that light of God's revealed salvation shine to all parts of the world. Borne in the power and baptism of the Holy Spirit with unflagging zeal by laborers together with God in close connection with the Great Teacher, taught daily of God through earnest wrestling prayer, it is to be carried into highways and byways and waste places of the earth at home and in regions beyond, reaching all parts of the world. Believers with a living experience are faithfully to labor in towns, country districts, and cities and carry that light to places where truth is not known, so hearts are converted and others join in seeking to fulfill God's purposes, including humble intelligent work to reach people ordinary methods do not reach. This includes Christian temperance and health reform and the message of saving grace that moves hearts to repentance and obedience, dispelling the darkness of error and unbelief from minds of the honest in heart in all lands who seek after God, shining brightly in new places despite Satan inventing every device to prevent spreading and hinder the work, which God's people must not let him succeed in doing.
