Isaiah 63:6

And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.

The One who speaks here is Christ, glorious in His clothing and advancing in greatness of strength, speaking in righteousness and mighty to save. He clothed Himself with humanity while remaining full of divinity, equal with God in majesty and glory. On the cross of Calvary He bore individual sins and sorrows, where mercy and truth met together and righteousness and peace kissed each other, purchasing His church with His own blood as the price of ransom. He trod the winepress alone with none of the people with Him, and when He looked there was none to help and none to uphold, so His own arm brought salvation and His fury upheld Him. His red apparel and blood-sprinkled garments mark that solitary suffering and victory. The treading down of the people in anger, making them drunk in fury, and bringing their strength to the earth is His judgment upon His enemies, with the day of vengeance in His heart, joined to the coming of the year of His redeemed.

This verse stands within the instruction of Isaiah 60 through 65, which speaks decisively to leaders for them to receive and heed. It belongs likewise to the decisive message of Isaiah 63 directed to God's people to be heeded. Heeding it means ceasing complaint and evil work and evil doing. It means repenting and being converted. Then the Lord will bring conviction and conversion to souls.
