As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
God's comfort of His people is like a mother comforting her child, tender and caring and intimate. It is His own promise to His people that they shall be comforted in Jerusalem. A mother's tenderness can help a child understand that comforting character of God, for human parental tenderness reflects His comforting care.
God Himself comforts those who are grieved and wounded and bruised by the selfishness and harshness and lack of love of fellow workers, calling them to lean on His arm as God and Father. His comfort replaces loss by giving heavenly treasure when earthly treasures are taken away and by supplying the lack with more of Himself when the dearest earthly attachments are removed, sending the richest tokens of grace in the deepest sorrow. He understands suffering every day, and He gives grace to endure pain even when He does not remove it.
His comfort leads the afflicted soul to break forth into praise and thanksgiving that affliction was good, since trials and losses purify and refine and fit for immortality and are to be borne with trust without murmuring or complaining. That comfort belongs to the afflicted, who can rest in Jesus and find refuge in Him. God's love and care are shown in redemption, and His everlasting arms support those who suffer.
