Isaiah 7:13

And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?

Isaiah 7:13 stands in the first part of Isaiah, among the prophecies of chapters 2-12, and more particularly within the connected account of chapters 7-9. It was uttered in the reign of King Ahaz, at a crucial time in Judah when sin and darkness characterized the state of God's people. Its immediate occasion was a conspiracy formed against Judah, met by stubbornness on the part of Ahaz.

In the verse Isaiah turns to the house of David, that is to the king and to Judah, with rebuke for unbelief and resistance. The charge is that they weary men, and that they go further and weary God also. That wearying of God is the result of their lack of faith in Him in the face of the threatened conspiracy.

The crucial times and conspiracies surrounding the verse are typical of the great days to come, and of conspiracies that will arise in the last days. Yet amid the darkness there were rays of light and hope for the future. That hope is grounded in chapters 7-9 in the prophecy of the coming Deliverer, Christ.
