Isaiah 7:24

With arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because all the land shall become briers and thorns.

The whole land was to become briers and thorns, so that men would come thither with arrows and with bows. Coming armed in that way shows the country had grown wild and unsafe to cultivate or travel through, with men entering it carrying weapons to hunt or to pass through it.

This desolation belonged to the reign of Ahaz and to a time of sin and darkness, yet with rays of hope for the future. Its setting was a conspiracy against Judah and a warning to the king for his lack of faith in God. Those events also serve as types of conspiracies in the last days.

The desolation is one of the evils God has brought upon men in the past, and none of those past evils has equaled what will come in the great day of the Lord, emphatically the great day of His wrath. The verse shows that the Messiah was first to appear as a man among men to die for the sins of the world.
