Isaiah 7:5

Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against thee, saying,

The evil counsel against Judah was taken by Syria and by Ephraim, that is the northern kingdom of Israel. The son of Remaliah named with them is Pekah, king of that northern kingdom. Their plan was to attack Jerusalem and to invade Judah, to break into it and weaken it. They meant to install there a king of their own choosing. Through Isaiah God assured Ahaz that their counsel and design would not succeed but would fail. Both of those hostile kingdoms would soon come to an end.

The chapter containing this word is to be read by those rebuked for perpetual backsliding, for refusing to return, for trusting in lying words, and for walking backward and not forward. It belongs together with the calls to amend ways and doings. It belongs together with the invitation to come to the waters, to hear, and to live under God's everlasting covenant.
