Isaiah 9:20 stands within Isaiah's reproof of Judah's sin, belonging to the rebuke delivered in chapters 7-9 against the nation's wrongdoing. That larger chapter was misread by the Jews, who took it to promise a famous and powerful ruler who would lead a successful revolt against Rome. Its message gave no warrant for expecting such a political deliverer.

The sinful conditions exposed in chapters 7-9 typify similar conditions to be found in the last days.
