Isaiah 9:4
For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian. For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.
Isaiah 9:4 belongs to a prophecy about the Messiah which Mary recognized as spoken of Jesus. It presents his coming as deliverance from oppression, breaking the yoke, staff, and rod that weighed upon the oppressed. That deliverance is set as hope for a people in darkness, who would see light in his appearing.
The child to whom the prophecy points has a mission that reaches beyond Israel to all peoples. His reign would not be won without suffering.
