James 1:17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Every good and perfect favor comes down from heaven from God as its source, who is called the Father of lights as the Maker of the heavenly lights, while created lights change and cast shifting shadows and He never varies or turns in any way. He exists in perfection from everlasting to everlasting and never changes in character, plan, requirements, or way of saving, and what is called His repentance is only a change of circumstances caused by human obedience or disobedience. His unchanging love is expressed in His holy law, which is the immutable transcript of His character, unalterable and eternal and needing no remodeling, including the seventh-day Sabbath as the memorial of His work as Creator. Christ is the Giver of every good gift and the Author of all blessings, who as Creator and source of every good gift gave Himself to redeem the world by humbling Himself and becoming poor so humanity might become rich. Those who lack wisdom should therefore go directly to Him in faith as little children, for He gives liberally without reproach, and every blessing of life, health, wisdom, and means received from His unfailing hand is a sacred trust to be acknowledged with daily thanksgiving and used and shared generously for His glory.

Language and Imagery

God is called the Father of lights because He is the One who made the heavenly lights. Created lights change and cast shifting shadows, but He does not change, and His goodness and generosity remain constant.

With Him there is no variableness nor shadow of turning, which means He never varies, shifts, or turns in any way. He is without any variation or instability, and remains the same through all time. He is the everlasting God, from everlasting to everlasting, who existed before He purposed to create the world. He has existed in perfection from all eternity and is ever what He now is.

Every good gift and every perfect gift means that every truly good thing comes down from above, from heaven, from God. Every favor and comfort comes from Him as the giver of all good gifts. He is the unchanging Father who does not change or shift, and the source of what is good.

God Who Never Changes

God does not change, and His character and plan remain the same in every age. He is the same Teacher and Guide of His people in every age, though His work may take different forms and His power be manifested differently to meet their needs. The God who gave the law through Moses is the same God revealed in Jesus, for the principles of His government and His claims proceed from Him and are the same in every age. He does not set aside His law to bring people into harmony with Himself, and His plan and way of saving remain the same. The law's penalty for sin is death, and the way back to life is repentance and faith in Christ's sacrifice, with acceptance conditioned on obedience to God's commandments.

He never changes in character, requirements, or conditions of acceptance. What is called His repentance is not change in Himself like human repentance as change of mind, but a change of circumstances and relations caused by human obedience or disobedience. A person may come into divine favor by complying with His conditions or place himself outside favor by disobedience, as Saul did, while He Himself and His requirements remain exactly the same. His unchanging nature is love, revealed in His holy law which expresses His love. That love ever has been and ever will be, and there is in Him no variation or turning. Recognizing human weakness and complete dependence on Him supports a true standard of Christian life.

His law shares His character as the transcript and expression of His character, without variableness, unalterable and eternal. He is absolute, invariable, immutable and truth itself, and what goes out of His lips is immutable eternal truth that He cannot alter. His law needs no remodeling to meet human need, for any change would mar its perfection and give Satan advantage in his charges against God. Satan himself will finally confess before the fallen world, unfallen worlds, and the hosts of heaven that his charges were unjust. The law is the standard every person must meet, and it is perfect and unalterable throughout the eternal ages.

The seventh-day Sabbath is surrounded by the authority of the God of truth whose nature does not change. He set apart the seventh day as a memorial of His work as Creator, and the Sabbath preserves knowledge of the true God, the Creator of heaven and earth. Satan's counterfeits do not carry God's mark, and even universal human endorsement of falsehood cannot annihilate God's truth, including the seventh-day Sabbath against the false Sabbath.

His righteousness is immutable, and His word, promises, will, and covenant faithfulness are as enduring and immovable as the everlasting hills and towering mountains in unchanging majesty. The towering immovable mountains point heavenward to His majesty and unchangeableness, and just as human power cannot move the mountains it cannot change His law or erase His promises to those who obey Him. As He has set fast the mountains and girded them with strength so that no arm but infinite power could move them, so He has established His law as the foundation of His government in heaven and on earth. The arm of man can as readily uproot the mountains and hurl them into the sea as change one precept of His law or blot out one of His promises to those who do His will. His will in His law, spoken from Mt. Sinai amid thunder and flame and smoke with a voice like a trumpet, remains unchangeable and eternal, and His Word will stand forever from generation to generation.

If man complies with the conditions, He will fulfill His part though the foundations of the earth should be broken up and the heavens should pass away. He stakes the honor of His throne upon His word, assured by the rainbow round about it, and the God of the mountains is defense and strong tower, giving help and strength to do His will. His servants should therefore remain firm in fidelity to His law, like the unchanging hills. He is always on the side of righteousness and truth, absolute, invariable, infallible truth, and He can bring down or build up. Those who accept Scripture as counselor and guide walk under His direction, for His holy word is true and His words remain authoritative through every age. All men are fallible like one another, so living connection with Him must come first and only then can connection with others be safe, and those who know the truth have grave responsibility to testify publicly that He is true and unchanging and to keep His commands in heart and life.

Every Gift Comes From Above

Every good and perfect gift comes down from above from God, the Father of lights, who holds the abundance of heaven to supply temporal and spiritual necessities and to better equip people to work for His glory. He is able to help and willing in answer to prayer to do more than is asked or thought, with gifts to be sought without self-justification, in humility and repentance, lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting. He is the one source of hope and help for fallen humanity, and true excellence of character cannot exist apart from Him. He is the source of all good, righteousness, and truth, in contrast to Satan whose influence leads toward deceit, idolatry, and moral ruin. Every good quality and every power to do good, all strength of soul and body, comes from Him, so men and women have no goodness of their own to claim and should not take credit or glory for wise and good deeds.

Every earthly blessing comes from Him freely, abundantly, and regularly as an unfailing daily provision, without which the earth would be filled with suffering and want. The blessings that sustain and nourish life come from Him and not from Baal or Ashtoreth, for His power guides the planets, keeps seasons and day and night in order, and controls hills, valleys, fountains, sun, clouds, brooks, streams, dew and rain, and all the powers of nature to bring forth vegetation. Sunshine and rain, beauty, food, harvests, animals, homes, clothing, health, friends, and other daily mercies are gifts of His providence, given even to the wicked and ungrateful as an entrusted provision that testifies to His love. They are not man's own to claim, and may be removed when persistently rejected, yet even in a world harmed by sin His provision and remaining beauty reveal His love, care, and desire to bless and bring hope.

The light of day gilding forest and mountain, meadow and stream, and the beauty of nature lift the mind to behold the Father of lights, revealing His character and majesty though He cannot be seen. His works are full of His praise and give daily revelations of Him, filling the heart with adoration and rejoicing, leading into more intimate communion, and strengthening mind and heart for future work. Wisdom given to those who ask is one of these gifts from the unchanging Father, who is not fickle or shifting. Every good impulse and aspiration is His gift, and faith receives from Him the life that alone produces true growth and efficiency. Heavenly wisdom is imparted to the soul by His Spirit, awakening it to heavenly things, drawing affections toward God and truth, and guiding to seek His approval and follow His will.

Heavenly light continues to be given from the Father of lights, and receiving it and welcoming Jesus transforms character toward a higher and holier life and greater usefulness, so each divine inspiration is to be valued and followed in continued growth. Truth and salvation come down from the Father of light as gifts, not achievements earned by human works, and refusing truth to protect cherished opinions or self-reliance rejects what He provides. Heavenly gifts are given even to the humblest who love and fear Him, and human talents are not independent possessions to boast in but are given and upheld by Him for use in His service by those who humbly seek His instruction. When darkness covers the earth men fail to discern His light, with human wisdom clouding the mind with ignorance and misconception, and Satan throws the mist and fog of skepticism across the pathway to eclipse it.

Setting in James

James 1:17 guards against mistaking the source of evil, for every good and perfect gift descends from the unchanging Father of lights, while temptation to evil never comes from God, and about this estimate of His gifts there must be no error. Sanctified discernment is needed to see all things clearly and not err in this matter. Of His own will He begets believers with the word of truth to be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures, giving new life through that word so that those who receive it become a kind of first harvest of His creation. This firstfruits standing means man stands highest of all God's works because he is to represent God, with men and women as members bought with blood to resemble Him. He who does this is the everlasting God who existed from everlasting to everlasting before He purposed to create the world.

Therefore everyone must be swift to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger, for human anger does not work the righteousness of God. Filthiness and wickedness must be laid aside and the implanted word that saves the soul received, with believers becoming doers of the word and not hearers only, continuing in the perfect law of liberty to be blessed in deed. The tongue must be bridled, and pure undefiled religion practiced by visiting the fatherless and widows in affliction and keeping unspotted from the world. All are to speak and act as those to be judged by the law of liberty, showing mercy, with faith proved alive by works that give the naked and hungry what they need, so that when the Word is received and obeyed light shines forth in good works.

The chapter belongs to God's great remedy for diseases of body and soul and to His health-reform prescription, with the same health principles presented also in the second chapter of James. Its instruction is practical, to be heeded day by day and brought into the daily life. Those who follow it in daily life are on the path to triumph at last with the overcomers.

Christ the Giver

Christ is the Giver of every good and perfect gift and the Author of all blessings, in whom is centered all hope of eternal life. He is the Chiefest among ten thousand, the One altogether lovely. He is to be set forth openly and with gladness, with joy and comfort and hope, with deep earnestness and love, so that Sabbath meetings, morning and evening home worship, chapel services, social meetings and all religious exercises are vitalized by His Spirit and heart is bound to heart. He is the source of true pleasure and satisfaction, and acknowledging Him as Giver belongs to preparing for translation to the heavenly world, keeping conversation in heaven while looking for Him to come.

As Creator and source of every good gift, His coming to redeem the world was itself a gift. He humbled Himself, took human nature, and gave Himself and became poor so that humanity might be made rich through His poverty.

His love for His children is tender and strong, stronger than death, because He died to purchase salvation and to make believers one with Him, mystically and eternally one. That love never changes but stays the same yesterday, today, and forever, never becoming unmindful, unkind, or cruel. It controls all His powers and continually uses the vast resources of heaven to do His people good. Although sin has existed for ages trying to counteract that love and block its flow earthward, it still flows in rich currents to those for whom He died. His grace is given not to sinless angels who have never needed it but to needy, undeserving men, who receive not because they are worthy but because they need it, and that very need assures them they may receive the gift.

He is the source of all light, efficiency, and spiritual power, and all honor, praise, and gratitude offerings belong to Him as Giver. No one is to glory in self or in success, but to draw from Him inspiration for the highest spiritual attainments, to consecrate everything to Him, and to lift Him up as the Man of Calvary who loved and washed men from sin in His own most precious blood.

Seeking God in Need

Those who lack wisdom and carry heavy burdens are to go directly to the Source of all grace and sufficiency and ask God in faith for what they need. No one needs to depend on overburdened fellow workers, to send far for finite human wisdom, or to pour complaints into human ears, for the door is open to all. Pastors, neighbors, and other fellow men cannot supply the help and wisdom required, which comes from God alone as the source of all light and all wisdom. He knows human ignorance and darkness and invites the laboring and heavy laden to come to Him, for Christ is nearer than is thought, hears and knows every burden, gives liberally without reproach, and stands behind every promise He has made. He never varies or changes, unlike finite, weak, erring men whose counsel carries no certain light unless received from heaven, and therefore those who lack wisdom must cease from man and ask God directly.

Wisdom is a gift coming down from above from God as Father, given in daily experience through His mercy and grace in Christ. God in Christ is ever near all who call upon Him in simplicity and sincerity as little children, realizing great need, with trustful confidence in the heavenly Father and trusting His wisdom above all human wisdom. Without this childlike trust those in positions of trust make grave mistakes and put their own mold and characteristics upon God's work instead of the mold and features of God, rather than putting too much confidence in the wisdom and judgment of human agencies. Firmness, patience, and self-control needed for a mother's duties are gifts from above to be sought through prayer at God's mercy seat. He has the abundance of heaven with which to supply necessities, and is able to help and willing in answer to prayer to do more than is asked or thought for those who seek without self-justification, with humility and repentance of sins, praying as a holy God requires, lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting.

Because He is unchanging and dependable, with no variation or turning, He can still be trusted when mist hangs over the eyes and what lies ahead cannot be seen. In the furnace of trials reliance on His steady guidance holds without insisting on one's own will, and moving with fear and trembling while looking in faith steadfastly to Jesus, praying without ceasing and letting every breath be a prayer, rests on His character. The religion of Jesus Christ through His grace imparts firmness and solidity of character, and a careful and prayerful walk before the Lord rests in confidence that He will direct in all ways. Those in God's service who meet the difficulties always connected with working new fields can draw near to Him knowing He will draw near to them, and trust in Him through both good and evil reports, knowing He watches over each step and is actively at work for His people. His care includes angelic help, and He revives the humble and contrite. Even amid earth's gloom and darkness gleams of brightness from the Fount of light shine on every hand, with needed blessings coming from His hand in direct and remarkable answer to prayer bowed in lonely sanctuaries, calling for praise with lighted countenance and changed voice, while through fragrant pines, clear moonlight, towering rocks, and lofty mountains communion is held with Him, His purposes of love and mercy are more fully revealed, and assurance that sins and errors are pardoned is felt.

His mercies are pledged to every soul who asks in faith, for every good and perfect gift comes down from above from the Father of lights, in whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning, who by His own will begets by the word of truth. The erring are to draw nigh to God, coming confessing dishonor of Him and transgression of His holy commandments, coming as a child in want to the heavenly Father trusting in Jesus Christ, seeking Him in prayer trusting the merits of Christ in sorrow and contrition. He will pardon transgressions, forgive sins, scatter all sins committed in disregard and defiance of the law of God, and receive the repentant as the father received the prodigal son, hastening to meet him, enfolding him in arms of infinite love, and covering him with the robe of His righteousness. He gives light in which defects of character are seen and strength from above by which they are remedied, so that those who see Him as He is see themselves as they are and are made what they ought to be, becoming helps instead of hindrances.

Those who accept the Bible as counselor and guide walk under His direction, for His unchanging character makes His holy word a reliable guide for conduct and a safe and steady guide directing steps along the path of life. Those guided by Him and His Word walk in straight paths because His character and direction do not vary or turn aside, and everyone who obeys and does His Word walks under His personal direction and is blessed abundantly. Whatever crosses are lifted, losses sustained, persecution suffered, even loss of temporal life for Christ, is amply repaid, because obedience secures a life that measures with the life of God, a life lasting through the eternal ages, and at last they shall see His face with His name in their foreheads. Presenting the truth without wavering or turning aside, as in Oakland, applies His unchangeableness.

Christ does not change or turn away from those who desire Him: He draws people to Himself and does not forsake them. He does not ask anyone to bear more than can be carried, but burdens are to be laid on Him because He is able to bear them. All good comes from God above, so earthly things alone cannot provide lasting happiness or prosperity, while His blessing attends those who trust Him, walk humbly with Him, and seek His counsel, and turning from Him gives no basis for expecting prosperity, health, or peace. Temporal and spiritual blessings come from Him as the eternal, uncreated source of all good and are not ours by right, so recognizing His goodness and love awakens gratitude, joy, and thanksgiving, and those who look to Him, trust Him, and cling to Him as heavenly Father receive assurance that He will fulfill His promises and give full joy, calling for renewed obligation and service rather than taking mercy for granted. His comfort and grace as the great Father of light and love sustain His child even while passing through the valley of death, where the light and joy asked of Him in the final hours are gifts that bring trust and freedom from fear.

Thankful Faithful Living

Every earthly blessing comes from God, who gives freely, abundantly, and regularly from an unfailing daily hand, without whose gifts the earth would be filled with suffering and want. Every good and perfect gift comes down from above from the Father of lights, so He is good and greatly to be praised at every step of the way. Health and the benefits enjoyed day by day are His gifts, so dependence on Him should be acknowledged by thanking Him daily and not remembering Him only when sickness comes. Even little children are to be taught to thank Him, speech is to be used in His service rather than in coarse misuse, and believers are to speak faith and not unbelief and keep going forward in trust.

Recognizing that no good thing is possessed except what comes from Him as Master from whom all blessings flow calls for proper respect shown in worshiping Him in a correct manner and suitable position. All good comes from the Giver who pities human weakness and wills to use believers as His instruments, so they should be thankful and encourage one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs making melody to God in their hearts. They should work for the good of one another following the example of Christ, live as cheerful Christians marching steadily heavenward rejoicing as those who behold the glory of God, and seek His approval above everything else instead of coveting the approval and praise of lovers of pleasure.

Time, talents, possessions, and every benefit are not a person's own but God's gift and sacred trust, with God having right of ownership in people themselves and in all they have. Men stand to God as borrowers who must render an account to Him for the use made of every faculty, and He alone can give wisdom to guide them so they make no mistake in using their powers according to His purposes. Money is His gift to be spent wisely in keeping with His will rather than to gratify pride, vanity, appetite, or other selfish desires, and to act as though time and possessions are one's own to be used as one pleases denies this gift and ownership. He gives probationary time as opportunity to form characters fit for heaven and asks people to reserve part of their possessions for Him not because He needs anything but because all good things come from His mercy and generous love seen in abundant provision, lest blessings be removed and weakness exposed.

Because He gives constantly, men should give constantly, with gratitude and love expressed by returning gifts and offerings to God in keeping with the resources He provides. His blessings continually provide sunshine and rain, cause plants to grow, make vegetation flourish, give health and ability to acquire means, and cause the earth to yield its bounty for human use, not to feed selfishness or attachment to possessions. In gratitude people are to return a portion to Him through tithes and thank, free-will, and trespass offerings, and to acknowledge Him gratefully by returning to Him His own. Everything connected with ministering before Him is to be without flaw, with the very best given freely without counting anything too good to be devoted to His service, to establish memorials of His goodness so that His service and worship will be an object lesson to the world of the perfection He requires, even though the costliest service is meager beside His wonderful gift to the world. Gold and silver are the Lord's placed in men's hands with man made steward and medium through whom divine gifts flow to others, entrusted not to be hoarded but to be used in benefiting others, supporting His cause and saving fellow men in fulfillment of the commission to preach the gospel to every creature, and recognizing His favors should lead to sharing generously to proclaim truth especially in new and needy fields, since hoarding wealth while others labor with inadequate means brings no blessing. This stewardship exalts man, stirs the deepest sympathies, calls into exercise the highest capabilities of mind, makes him benevolent and unselfish like his Creator, and finally makes him partaker with Christ of the eternal glorious reward.

Healing and every other good gift come from the unchanging Father of lights and Father of all mercies, so one restored to health is under renewed obligation to the Creator and should give Him glory and thanks for mercy received rather than taking it for granted. Recognizing that gifts and mercies come from God belongs to true education, for the truth sanctifies the heart and leads to gratitude expressed in thanksgiving and praise. Human praise and worldly elevation gained through disobedience to Bible principles are not His gifts of honor, for true honor comes from God whose character does not change, and all glory for wise and good deeds belongs to Him and not to human ability.
