James 4:8
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Draw near to God and He will draw near in return, with cleansing the hands meaning turning from sin in outward conduct and purifying the heart meaning turning from divided loyalty to give God the whole heart. The promise is without condition or exception and is open however sinful and guilty a person may be, and no one draws near except as God first draws by love and the Holy Spirit changes the heart to meet its need. Drawing near is done by humbling the soul, examining the heart, confessing sins to God and wrongs to others, genuinely repenting and turning from evil, and by humble earnest wholehearted seeking through prayer, faith, obedience and surrender of the will. God answers those who come with healing and comfort, with teaching, presence and power for spiritual life and service, and with rest, peace, strength and growing knowledge of Himself. Nearness to God gives safety from Satan so that submitting, drawing near in faith and resisting makes the devil flee, and it is continued day by day and hour by hour as a daily pursuit of growing closer.
Mutual Promise Explained
Draw near to God and He will draw near in return, for the verse promises reciprocal nearness to those who come humbly and repentantly rather than withdrawing after grieving the Spirit. Coming near brings awareness of faults and desire to grow, and it is done through faith and obedience, with cleansing of outward conduct and purifying of the divided heart. Divided loyalty, selfish ambition, and grief over lost status must be put away, and true humility that refuses strife for position and evil-speaking leads to being lifted up by the Lord. Answered prayer proves the promise true and gives reason to value closeness with Him. Nearness brings safety, for the enemy cannot stand before God's presence and angels raise a standard against him when submission, drawing near in faith, and resistance are obeyed.
The promise has no conditions or exceptions, leaving no excuse for despondency and no need to remain separated or despair of redemption. Enmity between God and the soul is removed only by drawing near, never by keeping away, and each soul must come for himself to partake of the heavenly banquet provided at infinite cost by eating God's words and making them part of himself. Even one bound by Satan can be restored, and others are to work with determined effort to pull him away by drawing together with Christ in soul-saving love rather than by accusation or prescribing precise steps, desiring that every man receive the eternal life Christ died to give and be saved for the work he alone is trained to perform. Sinners are called to seek the Lord and refuse to let Satan destroy the soul.
No one draws near without His first drawing, for God draws people by love and they answer by seeking Him. Every step toward God is taken in response to the drawing of the Holy Spirit, made by humbly and trustfully bringing needs to God, giving self to Him, and making wants known in sincerity. Every movement toward God receives a response from the God who hears and answers prayer, and the Holy Spirit inwardly changes the heart to meet the soul's needs. As seekers respond rather than waiting for a revival or for others to act, angelic help is sent even before they ask, and fixing the mind on Jesus brings comfort and light through Christ's merit.
The nearness continues as long as a person keeps drawing near, making faithful stewardship and guidance in judgment possible. Drawing near is a daily and hourly practice of contemplating Christ's life and work, denying self, taking up the cross, following Jesus as pattern, and practicing preached truth with the measure of power and light entrusted to shine to the world. It is an ongoing personal aim joined with dissatisfaction with self, desire for more of God's love, and dedication of the whole person to service. The call becomes a daily question whether one is growing closer as time passes, expressed in watchful prayer and concern for helping others come to Christ and in seeking Him for rest and fullness of peace.
Feeling weak or insufficient is meant to lead to seeking help rather than carrying responsibilities alone. The troubled, sorrowful, despondent, tempted, discouraged, backslidden, and no longer devoted are called to humble earnest seeking in prayer to receive the Holy Spirit, with cleansing of actions and purifying of double-minded hearts from moral defilement, selfishness, and idols. Crises may be allowed to reveal helplessness so that God's children depend on Him and fear no evil in His presence, and changing difficulties then strengthen and prepare them for work. The promise is precious to the tempted soul: resisting makes the devil flee, and keeping the eye fixed on Jesus while talking of His goodness and mercy brings Jesus near until almost unbearable annoyances vanish. Coming forward openly for the Holy Spirit and deeper faith is proper and not shameful, strengthening faith and encouraging others, and turning from the world toward God in repentance and conversion brings blotting out of sins.
Coming is voluntary and open however sinful and guilty a person may be, for Christ's step-by-step humiliation and sacrificial death on Calvary opened the way to lift, cleanse, refine, ennoble, and place sinners as joint heirs upon His throne. Perishing souls are to come just as they are with no plea except Christ's atoning blood, by which never-failing passport petitions gain access to the throne and find acceptance with God who dwells in glory between the cherubim above the mercy seat, though He is too pure and just to behold iniquity. Christ came to call sinners to repentance, to take away sin, give His righteousness, and make people complete in Him, since no one can improve himself or bless others apart from Him and the merits of His blood. Drawing near therefore means turning from self-reliance and sin, surrendering the will to God's will, renouncing what God condemned in radical change of heart, changing leaders from Satan to God, and building on the Rock to obtain victory, conviction, conversion, and self-knowledge in light from the cross; without this the sinner remains held and never conquers.
Those who give themselves to God and seek Him with the whole heart can draw near, and He keeps His promise to draw near to them. Erring ones are to use every means of grace by coming just as they are like a needy child to a heavenly Father, confessing dishonor and transgression, asking help and light, praying in sorrow and contrition with real desire to return while trusting Christ's merits, which is not degrading but a prodigal's return. God hastens to meet every step of repentance and even the first step, enfolding in arms of infinite love, pardoning transgressions, scattering sins committed in disregard and defiance of law, covering with the robe of righteousness, and receiving as the father received the prodigal, turning away no contrite soul. This call to draw near with determined hearts, heart-searching, humbling, repentance, and putting away self and separation applies to backsliders as well, and invites courage, faith, and hope.
Drawing near requires personal effort and willing response rather than waiting to be healed, changed, or for others to act. Like stretching out the withered hand at Christ's command, the act of faith is evidence of belief, and God meets it with healing and nearness, while clinging to darkness dishonors God and misrepresents the sin-pardoning Savior. Taking the first step in desire to obey and live in light brings God's reaching help, and truth blesses only those who let it purify the soul so that Bible religion shapes the whole life including everyday matters. Drawing near brings light, love, peace, and hope to those who respond to loving drawing by seeking, with assurance of help including angels' ministry.
Cleansing Hands Purifying Hearts
Cleansing the hands means turning from sin in outward conduct and actions, and purifying the heart means turning from inward divided loyalty to give God the whole heart. Drawing near includes confessing wrongs done to others and coming humbly, sorrowfully and repentantly rather than withdrawing after grieving the Holy Spirit, with faith, obedience, prayer and all one's actions, abandoning sinful actions, selfish ambition and divided motives. This is the lesson for the present time of preparation for life in heaven, not grief over losing status or supremacy nor strife for status or speaking evil of others.
The double-minded try to love and serve both God and the world, professing faith while cherishing sin and worldly affection. They are unanchored like waves tossed to and fro, unstable, unreliable, moved by emotion not principle, clouded in discerning sacred things, and weakened in duty to God. Such divided loyalty calls for more than admitting sin or mere profession, but genuine repentance, earnest heart-examination, humble childlike dependence, turning from evil, sorrow over inclination to sin and vulnerability to temptation, turning from the world's pollution, folly, vanity, pride and friendship with the world to obey the pure principles of truth. This humble, serious spirit without boastful self-confidence, accusing and judging others, is fitting for believers in the last days.
Unclean hands are wrong practices and a defiled heart is impure double-minded character needing thorough conversion, renovated moral taste, and complete renewal. Purifying the heart means bringing the pure principles of the light of truth into life and character and cultivating reverence for handling sacred things, with power given to perform what is required and leading step by step so as not to go astray. Without this cleansing no one brings God's wisdom into labor or does justice to His work, and those turning back must break free from the enemy's influence, lay aside self-righteousness, humble themselves and come into line.
The call to cleanse and purify belongs with mourning over sin, affliction, turning laughter and joy to heaviness, and humbling oneself before the Lord, with the promise that the Lord will lift up the humble. The pure light of His Word heals the wounds sin has made in the soul, and those easily overcome by the devil's temptations are to mourn, submit, draw near in faith and resist. Nearness so gained brings safety from Satan, who fears God's presence, and angels raise a standard against the enemy when these directions are obeyed.
Purification requires honest speech and thorough change, not speaking words one does not mean or persisting in a false tongue. Foolish joking, trifling, and condemning others do not mark a purified heart, though truth-shaped cheerfulness can be right, and facing the seriousness of sin belongs to the call. Closeness is lived out by handling the Word with soberness and reverence, being pure in speech and holy in conduct, rightly using speech, voice and every ability, since unsanctified, faithless, empty words and vain conversation hinder prayer, forfeit the Spirit's influence, stop spiritual growth and keep from deep knowledge of love, while pure elevating words belong to turning from transgression.
Cleansing includes keeping God's temple pure and holy for His use, for yielding to temptation and losing sight of God cloud spiritual perception, though the way remains open for renewed strength. It means coming out from the world to His standard by observing His law governing minds for happiness in love leading to obedience, where the first four commandments show duty to God and the last six forbid selfishness toward fellow men, with impurity known by that law. When failure is seen the sinner flees to Christ as Stronghold and sin-pardoning Saviour who pardons sins of ignorance, and as He kept His Father's commandments those who do them are blessed to enter in; humbling also includes putting away whatever corrupts body and spirit to grow in holiness in reverence.
Cleansing the hands by changing conduct and purifying the heart by inward repentance applies to abandoning tobacco and bringing appetites and passions under control. Drawing near means seeking His help and striving to prepare mind and body to fulfill life's duties rightly, with the wise person governing appetite and passion rather than being ruled by them and working in harmony with God.
Turning from selfish purposes, confessing sins to God, and purifying minds from divided loyalties with conversion prepare people to work with God in this life and to join the redeemed. Washing robes of character in the Lamb's blood by seeking cleansing lets people as they draw near see sin as it truly is and its offensiveness to God.
Humility Confession Repentance
Drawing near is done by humbling the soul, coming repentantly rather than withdrawing after grieving the Holy Spirit, acknowledging weakness and unbelief, making weakness known to Jesus, examining the heart earnestly, confessing sins to God, confessing wrongs done to others and making them right, cleansing outward actions, purifying a divided heart, and genuinely repenting that turns from evil and sorrows over inclination to sin and vulnerability to temptation. Drawing near in this humble, sorrowful, dependent way brings awareness of personal faults and desire to grow, and the pure light of the Word heals the wounds sin has made in the soul while nearness to God gives safety from Satan, who fears God's presence and flees those who resist. Cleansing the hands and purifying the heart means turning from sin and divided loyalty, submitting to God, resisting the devil, abandoning self-centered conduct, and seeking transforming grace, joined to mourning and humbling with the promise that the Lord will lift the humble. The double-minded try to serve both God and the world, professing faith while cherishing sin and indulging in sin while professing religion, which makes them unstable, unreliable, and in need of facing the seriousness of sin; cleansing is more than admitting sin and calls for honest speech, thorough change of character, not speaking words not meant nor persisting in a false tongue, with truth-shaped cheerfulness right but foolish joking, trifling, and condemning others no sign of a purified heart. No one can safely instruct others until converted, humbled, and sanctified by thus turning toward God, who in turn draws near to those who turn from sin and seek a pure heart and abandon divided loyalty.
Drawing near that receives the promise means humbling the soul before God with full purpose of heart in true earnest heart-service, believing for pardon, repenting, confessing and forsaking sin, turning from evil and learning to do good, shutting the windows of the soul earthward against the poisonous malaria of unbelief and opening them heavenward to the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness, and seeking cleansing of hands and heart. Without this cleansing God will not accept prayers, while with it humbling in seeking brings grace, salvation, full pardon of all transgressions and full redemption, peace, spiritual gain, lifting up, and stability so that one vacillating between hope and brightness one day and yielding to temptation and unbelief the next becomes stable and a laborer together with God, an heir of God and joint heir with Christ called to share the divine nature. Those who humble themselves, repent, confess, turn from transgression, and draw near will find God drawing near, living with pure elevating words and receiving mercy and pardon in coming to Jesus in repentance.
Drawing near involves heartfelt contrition and full assurance of faith, tearful heartfelt confession, continual humiliation of soul, feeling weakness, and open rupture with Satan and sin, laying hold with earnest purpose and living faith upon God's strength to become an overcomer. As believers thus come near, they receive help in the struggle against evil and the enemy who seeks to destroy them is overcome. Selfishness, depravity, passion, self-indulgence, and sins conscience brings to mind, not only sins pointed out, keep God from working through His professed people and must be repented and confessed. Such humiliation is most acceptable to God, brings great peace and joy from the Lord, proves the Lord has touched the heart by the Holy Spirit in a miracle more wonderful than physical healing, wrestling with natural defects and overcoming them until the inward character is molded after the divine Pattern, Christlike, the highest type of man and true child of God beheld with great joy by the universe of God.
Drawing near requires an advance movement of heart-searching to find and confess whatever keeps the Saviour away, beginning by asking the Lord to search the heart as with a lighted candle, since He knows every page of personal history, never makes an untrue decision, and before Him all things are naked and open. What must be found and confessed includes especially jealousies, evil-surmisings, selfishness, self-sufficiency, hardheartedness, worldliness, and love of display and pleasure, for selfishness and self-sufficiency close the heart against Jesus by choosing one's own way instead of His. When the prayer for God to know the heart is offered with contrition of soul, self-exaltation ends, Christ becomes all and in all, and the person will not rest until the Holy Spirit reveals Christ as righteousness; then God has found the person and the person is greatly relieved to be found by God. Humbling under God's hand with simple heartfelt confession, simple prayer of faith, and talking and living faith opens the way for God to draw near, hear, lift up, and give large things, sending the Holy Spirit to convert soul, body, and spirit, taking away the stony heart and giving a tender heart He can impress, turning the face heavenward toward holy endeavor and fashioning life and character after the divine pattern.
When sinners draw near with confession and prayer out of felt need and with repentance and living faith, God draws near in return with mercy, forgiveness, and blessed assurance, giving precious seasons of communion, comfort in affliction, sustenance of faith, and assurance of His mercy and care. His promises express boundless love and compassion and His desire to restore His moral image in people, who are to believe He is their helper, for connecting with Jesus means He pardons transgressions and receives the repentant graciously. Turning to Him with confession and repentance is met by His drawing near with mercy and forgiveness.
If people most earnestly seek, confess wrong, repent of sin, turn to God with all the heart, and lay hold of His promises by living faith, God will come near and the glorious power of His salvation will be manifested in their midst. If those seeing their true condition and need persevere, make thorough work of repentance, and keep coming close, God will come close, lift up a standard against the enemy for them, and send a certain outpouring of His Spirit. Drawing near is coming to the light in confession of blindness, unbelief, prejudice, wrong spirit and actions with a tender spirit; God then helps clear away the rubbish from the door of the heart to let Jesus come in, clearing the King's highway and bringing new hope, strength and courage, restored confidence and closer unity in Christ, with light from the Lord reflected upon hearts, changing countenances and shining out from them.
When churches awake and seek the Lord now while He may be found, humbling the heart, praying earnestly, weeping and pleading for pardon and forgiveness until victory is gained and the sin-pardoning Saviour is present with power, repenting and confessing sin and seeking His face, God draws near and works powerfully for His purposes. As His people reform and His love revives in their hearts, He answers requests, strengthens reformatory work, blesses, gives safety in His presence and power, and His presence becomes visible to others who may then join His people; done together, continually drawing near brings His nearness in return and makes believers one in reaching upward to Him. This was shown when Brother and Sister Daniels drew near and God drew near to them, their drawing near working out salvation with fear and trembling through prayer and heartfelt confession while God worked in them to will and to do His good pleasure, bringing the healing and blessing promised to those who fear His name. Continually drawing near together puts churches under His cultivation as gardens of the Lord and makes His people trees of righteousness planted by Him and watered with the river of life, able to be very fruitful instead of bearing the grapes of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Accepting correction with humbled heart and reforming, turning from wrong ways, letting the heart break before God, confessing and forsaking what has separated the person from Him, and making wrongs right including wrongs done to one's mother begins drawing near that expects God to draw near, cleanse from sin, answer contrite prayers, bestow rich gifts, and help in understanding self. Every soul is called to come close by standing before Him in personal nothingness, putting off unbelieving hard thoughts and laying aside fleshly reasonings, recognizing His presence as holy ground. The call is a warning given in love to be received as from God, so that past failure to follow His leading is understood, is not repeated as if ordered by the Lord, and no stumbling blocks are placed before one's own feet.
Seeking God Daily
Drawing near is humble, earnest, wholehearted seeking through prayer, faith, obedience, surrender of the will, and constant dependence, and God answers such seeking by drawing near and blessing. It is not prayer alone but the whole life and all actions turned toward Him, with sinners cleansing outward conduct and the double-minded purifying divided hearts. The troubled, sorrowful, despondent, and those grown cold receive the Holy Spirit as they seek in prayer, and seekers of greater blessing make a decided public witness while being cleansed from moral defilement, selfishness, and idols. Such approach is right and without shame, bringing humility, contrition, and the purifying influence of faith working by love.
Drawing near comes through studying the Word, much earnest prayer, contemplation, and reflection on His goodness, mercy, and lovingkindness. It is keeping the eyes fixed on Jesus, remembering His nearness everywhere, sensing the companionship of angels, and keeping thoughts and conversation on heavenly things. To come close is to enter His presence closely enough to know His voice, feel the Spirit's influence, breathe His atmosphere, and be comforted, so that troubles that seemed unbearable vanish. His nearness so gained raises a standard against the enemy that cannot be passed, keeps life in the soul, and keeps love from growing cold unto the final judgment.
Drawing near means bringing cares, trials, perplexities, burdens, and questions for guidance directly to God as Teacher and Counselor. It is an individual privilege of seeking wisdom to know what He wants done, with obedience, prayer, faithful work, and teaching children to follow Him. Finite men are not to be made intercessors or put between the soul and God, for fellow men have no more strength, while the great Counselor is infinite in wisdom and Jesus is the source of all power. This direct coming requires putting away sin, purifying the heart, sorrowing over wrong, humbling self, and asking cleansing from sin and healing of backsliding and forgetfulness, with the promise that He will lift up the humble.
Drawing near means guarding hours for prayer and self-examination and setting apart part of each day for study of Scripture and communion with God. It is staying long enough to yield the will, not hurrying through a few moments without waiting for counsel, which gives spiritual strength, growth in favor, noble aspirations, and character fashioned after the divine likeness. Earnest prayer so fills the heart with high and holy purposes and deep longings for purity and clearness of thought and righteousness. Communion necessary for strength to serve shapes thoughts and character aright.
Drawing near means earnestly seeking in secret prayer and public worship, pleading for self and others, and acting in harmony with prayer. It is uplifting the soul to God in prayer wherever one is, making requests known with sensitive conscience and close guarding of self instead of trust in self, for neglect breeds an evil heart of unbelief. Faithful prayer so lived with watchfulness and consistency brings help, enables discernment of soul-saving duty, and calls for continued steps toward being right with Him. Seeking communion with Him in faith is met by His drawing near.
Drawing near is helped by desire, silent prayer, resistance to satanic agencies, and placing the will on God's side in cooperation with heaven. Even one desire to resist with sincere prayer for deliverance gives strength for the day, brings angelic help to do what cannot be done alone, and brings unity so believers come close to one another. It means constantly looking away from self to Christ the Captain for orders instead of following defective human judgment. Then He draws near with presence and power, not leaving believers to fight alone but sending angels to compose the army with them, which is what every believer and chief worker needs to inspire confidence and faith. Turning from self-importance and human plans to let Christ guide work and heart belongs to the same reliance.
Drawing near means praying in secret to God who helps rather than telling weaknesses to people, clinging to Him apart from the bustle of the world, sitting under His shadow, fixing thoughts on the Savior and high holy things, and by faith placing self in the Redeemer's hands. Those who obey this direction receive strength, and a heaven of blessing waits for the contrite and humble, with help and blessing poured out beyond room to receive. Waiting thus brings a leaf from the tree of life that soothes and refreshes, filling the heart with peace, joy, and grace, renewing strength amid toil and conflict, lifting thoughts higher, bestowing rich blessings, and enabling acceptable service, though He works in His own way and not the sinner's way. As people wait He draws them into prayer, gives sense of His love and tenderness and compassion, melts the heart, guides prayers to ask what He promised, and makes Christ abide within while His glory goes before. Living very near by talking with Him brings the promise of His return, and He becomes wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption to those feeling need, as bearing His yoke and learning meekness brings rest and the consciousness of His presence drives doubts away.
Approaching in faith includes believing that He exists and rewards those who diligently seek Him, as in Hebrews 11:6. Even the faint and unbelieving are urged to approach and hold fast with persevering faith, trusting He will draw near in fulfillment of promise. Earnest prayer is accepted and receives the benefit of His nearness, and He makes Himself known to humble hearts with inward devotion and wholehearted seeking, whereupon the grace of the Holy Spirit rests. Coming close by believing, walking in His counsel, and offering humble prayer with confidence in Him as hearing and answering causes Him to come close in return. He then reveals power, wisdom, and Himself as helper in every emergency even when struggle is permitted, for He knows every weakness and suffering, hears persevering petitions, welcomes the helpless with full assurance, and gives comfort and evidence of blessing.
Believers redeem the time by taking Christ's yoke, lifting His burden, stirring up the gift within, using knowledge of reasons of faith to give light, refusing to rest with little knowledge, searching the Scriptures and digging for gems of truth as for hidden treasure, and praying for wisdom to present truth clearly and connectedly. He waits to pour blessing as soon as they draw near and grasp promises by living faith, for heaven is full of light and strength to be drawn upon. So drawing near brings walking in light with wisdom increasing day by day and knowledge of truth greater tomorrow than today, growing from dwarfs in Bible knowledge and religious life to full stature in Christ.
God Answers Seekers
God draws near to answer those who draw near with healing and comfort, for the pure light of His Word heals the wounds sin has made in the soul, the nearness of Jesus brings peace, and the Holy Spirit comforts the trusting soul so that troubles that seemed unbearable vanish. This comfort was known through earnest prayer in suffering, when Jesus came near with sufficient grace and the soul could rest in Him. Rather than withdrawing after grieving the Holy Spirit, the sinner is to approach humbly and repentantly, confessing wrongs done to others, cleansing actions, purifying a divided heart, and growing in awareness of faults and desire for growth.
Coming close in prayer during pain, suffering, helplessness, sleepless nights, and gathering darkness brings His nearness in return with sweet comfort, light, the sacred nearness of Jesus, a soul stayed upon God, and full grateful praise to Him who loved and gave Himself. Affliction itself can be part of His plan to draw a person very close to teach trust in what He knows is best rather than dictating to Him, holding the vantage ground as more than conqueror through Jesus Christ. Seeking to be nearer can continue even through darkness, grief, and suffering, turning sorrow into praise. In physical weakness drawing near means seeking the help only God can give and bringing Him needs without trying to argue or justify the case before Him.
Drawing near brings an individual experience of His teaching, presence, and power, for God as Teacher comes near to every believer who comes near, especially to gain wisdom to know what He wants done by humbling the heart, praying earnestly, and carrying cares and perplexities to Him for guidance. This nearness is the source of spiritual life and fruitful service, since successful work for souls depends not on human plans but on life received from Jesus, and those who press forward by faith in prayer, work, and constant dependence, looking away from self to Christ the Captain for orders instead of defective human judgment, find obstacles removed and angels sent to compose the army. Through Christ He gives instruction each day by which people learn to avoid the enemy's snares.
Coming closer means entering His presence closely enough to know and understand His voice, feel the influence of His Spirit, take in that influence, and breathe the atmosphere that comes from Christ. As a person seeks to draw nearer, the Holy Spirit draws near to that person. Coming close in thought and devoted service causes God to come close in return and draws angels toward such people, and gaining everything for time and eternity and growing after the divine likeness depends on much communion with God by determined will, while wasting time and thought on self-seeking loses eternal accomplishments.
Drawing near by surrendering self with all its worries and perplexity, refusing to lead self but being led, guided, and sanctified through the truth, living by every word from the mouth of God, throwing away looking on the dark side and talking unbelief, taking hold with faith and thinking not of self but of Jesus Christ, gives the richest grace mortals can have. In drawing near in this way believers draw near to one another, loving as brethren while Jesus intercedes for erring souls. His near response in daily life puts praise in the mouth to speak for Him and teaches thanksgiving like the angels' song, reveals the light and love of an indwelling Saviour in every act, and places the life lived by faith on the Son of God beyond the reach of outward troubles. Those who thus honor Him are helped to move forward, their trust brings peace, and their believing prayers are answered to His glory, showing those who expect failure that His word triumphs.
Drawing near involves consecrating the soul and bowing to the cross of Calvary, and He draws near in return not to harm but to comfort, bring joy, and heal the wounds Satan has made. Healing for sickness of spirit comes through the touch of Christ, who had no communion with sin yet took the sins of every human being so that sinners coming to Him might be saved, and drawing near means taking periods of rest and laying burdens at the feet of Jesus so worry and sleeplessness are removed, turning from worldly business that distracts with unimportant matters, keeping principles pure and holy, and doing nothing that injures reputation as reliable and trustworthy. Drawing near brings the fulfillment of His promise to draw near with blessing and with grace and power to make efforts effective, sustained by daily learning Christ's lessons of meekness and lowliness of heart and wearing His yoke.
This nearness is the only hope for receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit and great spiritual blessings, which the Father tests before giving to see if life can be lived without dishonoring Him, for blessings do not come by mere asking and no one should think he already has all the spiritual help he needs, but great blessings require complying with conditions God Himself laid down. As James and John thought asking alone could give the highest place yet had to wear Christ's yoke and daily learn His meekness and lowliness before sharing His glory, so drawing near requires that same yoke and daily learning, obeying and honoring His law, running the race and fighting the battles with the cross before the crown, and learning of Christ to find rest because His yoke is easy and His burden light, with salvation to the uttermost for all who come. Drawing near brings rest and fullness of peace as a daily practice, with growing wisdom and knowledge of God, and with encouragement and strength for conflict. To see His face in the future requires becoming Christlike now, knowing Him as a present personal Saviour, keeping eyes fixed on God, and removing whatever earthly thing comes between, even at great cost, without delaying preparation.
When people walk humbly before God and seek with contrition of soul, He manifests Himself to them. Trusting wholly and seeking to know and do His will brings His nearness in return, hiding with Christ in God because time is short, and preparing every believer to be a herald so the good news of salvation through Christ and the third angel's message is proclaimed throughout the world to every soul who has not heard. Crises can lead His children to recognize helplessness, plead with Him, and place themselves wholly in His care, preparing them to be taught with new and advancing light. Coming close when tempted and tried brings comfort because He comes close as a present help in every time of need, making it possible to walk with Him in peace by relying fully on His power and trusting Him to understand motives, keep plans pure in the turning of providence, lift the cloud so things are seen more clearly, and open the way. When people draw near He draws near, His glory goes before them, He guides their prayers to ask for what He promised, and when a person clings He sustains with strength and grace to serve and trust His leading.
Drawing near together in earnest prayer brings blessing, for when believers draw near together He draws near and blesses them. When people turn toward Him He comes near to bless, as He drew near in response to prayer for students who came forward to become Christians and commit themselves to Him. At the 1844 general meetings small groups gathered to seek God and His blessing and their prayers were answered, and the same practice brings the same results.
Victory Over the Devil
Nearness to God gives safety from Satan, for Satan fears God's presence and cannot harm the person who is near Him. Drawing near is done by submitting to God, coming in faith and humble dependence, examining the heart, confessing sins and wrongs done to others, cleansing outward actions and purifying a divided heart, mourning over being easily overcome, and resisting the devil so that he flees. When these directions are obeyed, God and His angels raise a standard against the enemy that he cannot pass, and trials and temptations entrusted to God purify and humble rather than destroy.
Christ's victory over Satan in the wilderness proves the promise and gives the pattern to follow, His victory being as complete as Adam's failure was complete. Jesus gained that victory through submission and faith in God, and believers gain the same victory by submitting to God and drawing near to Him while resisting Satan so the tempter must depart. Human strength alone cannot save from the tempter's power, since he has conquered humanity and overcomes all who stand in their own strength. The weakest soul who finds refuge in the Lord as the unfailing and sufficient source of help is safe and causes Satan to tremble and flee, receiving all needed power and ability from God to guard every weak point of character and make it strong by grace.
Drawing near is pursued through inward struggle against self and crucifixion of fleshly lusts, which gives mastery over the devil. That nearness guards moral prosperity by putting away all idolatry even in religious form, standing firm to principle by faithfully keeping the commandments, and taking on no burden that would hinder doing the Lord's will. Drawing near brings God near to lift up a standard against the enemy when the enemy comes like a flood. This is fulfilled by working on the plan of addition, constantly adding virtue to faith and knowledge to virtue, carrying out received instruction, walking in daily light, watching and praying and being willing to be corrected, which gives strength to overcome temptation and stand on vantage ground without being overcome.
Linking closely with Christ and drawing near brings God's protecting nearness so Satan has no power to overcome, even when satanic agencies work in unexpected ways in robes of an angel of light to win church members and teachers of the Word by dwelling on perplexities and supposed needed changes. Changing circumstances do not change God's relation to His people or lessen His keeping power, so they can trust His love, resist unbelief, and let faith stand its trial without wavering because Christ is a perfect Saviour. Drawing near connects with the source of all strength and gives power to overcome sin instead of falling again and again, for Christ bore sins in His own body on the tree and gives power to resist the world, the flesh, and the devil. The face must be set as a flint to overcome rather than clinging to infirmities and talking of weakness, for talking of Satan's strength fastens his power more firmly while talking of Christ and His strength and the power of the Mighty One drives the enemy back, and Satan tries to obstruct approach to God because he knows God is the source of strength. Living in constant dependence also gives discernment of Satan's temptations and leaves no room for self-sufficiency to flourish.
When a tempted person draws near, God draws near and raises a defense against the enemy, giving peace and the quickening influence of the Holy Spirit. Earnest prayer and communion teach what sin's violation of the law means and how costly redemption was, so people come to hate the sins that wound Christ, recognize Jesus as a compassionate and tender High Priest, and bow before Him in contrition. Continuing to draw near helps recognize sin's true character and resist the devil, for beholding Jesus changes the person into His image and gives discernment to see sin. This active help belongs to those dead to the world through baptism in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, who keep the commandments and love His law, living within the covenant where the three powers of heaven give might and every heavenly advantage. Drawing near is done by asking God in perplexity, distress, and pain, telling Him troubles at any time and place, coming to Christ as first and last and best in everything, and trusting Him daily, which brings nearness, hearing, relief, and peace in the heart.
Every family can rise to a much higher standard by drawing near and receiving power to resist because the Spirit lifts up a standard, and close fellowship with Christ leaves Satan powerless to overcome with a safeguard raised against him. Drawing near means turning at once to humble, earnest prayer when temptation to faultfinding, censuring, and picking flaws presses in, whether in a large assembly or where only two or three are together, instead of letting Satan gain entrance. When believers so bow before God, He draws near by lifting up a standard, delivering from unwholesome speech, sanctifying the tongue, and giving converting and reconverting power, while those who violated baptismal vows draw near by repenting and being converted and then cease unchristlike dealing. When one willing to see danger and lack draws near, God draws near to supply what is lacking from the inexhaustible fullness in Christ and to lift up a standard, calling for building on Christ the Rock and not on sand with undivided service, whole-hearted surrender, willing obedience, and no justifying of a past wrong course.
Drawing near means turning to God for strength and resisting Satan rather than relying on self or lingering in doubt and unbelief, and those who seek God can break Satan's hold, drive back the foe, and triumph through God. The call warns to turn from dangerous conduct and seek closeness rather than give Satan an opening to gain the soul, for those who remain on forbidden ground shut out heaven's light and risk perishing. Coming near requires resisting the tempter so he flees, breaking away from the accuser, commanding Satan to depart, confessing the grievous sin of heeding his suggestions and listening no more, having the whole heart changed and thoroughly cleansed, and falling on the Rock Christ to be broken and accepted. Without that breaking and surrender to Christ, heaven will be lost. Drawing near includes submitting to God and resisting the devil not only in prayer but in all actions, and believers can claim it with full assurance and ask Christ to undertake their case because by giving His life as propitiation for the sins of the world He has undertaken every soul's case.
Drawing closer and still closer enables every person to come through every temptation unharmed. In the face of the enemy's efforts to spoil life, the verse calls for trust in the Lord and closeness to Him by looking to Jesus, watching unto prayer, and committing the keeping of the soul to God as a faithful Creator who keeps what is committed to His trust. Drawing nigh is overcoming joined with resisting the enemy by taking up the cross and following Christ, cheerfully doing things contrary to natural inclination in the self-sacrificing life He came from heaven to show. In His strength perfection is to be gained because He has made it possible, and drawing nigh is daily, hourly, day-by-day closeness as preparation for the judgment and second coming when books are opened, Christ reckons with those trading on His goods, results and rewards are proportionate to talents entrusted and to faithful self-denying work, and everything done in sincerity, accurately weighed in the golden scales of the sanctuary, is not in vain in deciding eternal destiny.
Transformed Life Together
The call is preparation for heaven and for standing in the great day of the Lord in a time of gross darkness about what sin is. It requires solid practical work from every soul to come close with the promise of return closeness, to put away sinful deeds, to cleanse outward conduct and purify the divided heart from divided loyalty. This is true sanctification and symmetrical character-building, lessons for the present time, a special inward cleansing of mind and heart to be done because the end is near, rather than trusting beautiful songs, sentimental poems, soaring religious ideas, strife for status, speaking evil, friendship with the world and its folly, pride, vanity, and boastful self-confidence to save. Humility before God with mourning and seriousness, rather than worldly folly, leads to His merciful lifting up of the humble.
The Christian life is a conflict requiring obedience, self-denial, and victory over self, with trust and following making Christ the Guide along the difficult path to immortal life and final victory. Coming near brings strengthening help in return, with angels coming near to strengthen for duty, by repenting instead of giving up in discouragement, subduing the natural heart in everyday work, gaining experience in overcoming one point to be strengthened for the next, and walking in obedience to known duty. Resisted temptation then proves beneficial by teaching flight to Christ for help, and this growing experience perfects character and fits for eternal life not by instantaneous sanctification but by gradual growth like first the blade then the ear then the full grain.
In settling grievances the call applies through humility, confession, and putting away pride and resentment so hearts are healed and ready for blessing. It rebukes jealousy and faultfinding, talebearing and gossip sowing dissension, stirring up strife, tearing down brethren to build up self, suspicion, evil surmising, criticism, speaking evil of one another, and an unforgiving elder-brother spirit that accuses and magnifies faults of an erring or restored brother. The remedy is to submit, resist so he flees, draw near with promise of return nearness, cleanse sinful hands and purify double-minded hearts, be afflicted and mourn and weep with laughter turned to mourning and joy to heaviness, humble the soul to be purified and refined by the Holy Spirit, remember own faults, put away evil thoughts about a brother, and become loving, kind, courteous brethren. Drawing near means turning at once to humble earnest prayer when temptation to faultfinding, censuring, and picking flaws presses in, whether in large assembly or where only two or three are together, instead of letting Satan gain entrance; then God lifts a standard against the enemy, delivers from unwholesome speech, sanctifies the tongue, and gives converting and reconverting power, and those who violated baptismal vows repent and are converted and cease unchristlike dealing. It promises mercy to those who search their own hearts, humble before God, and confess own sins and faults instead of acting as sin-bearers by confessing a brother's defections, watching for evil, seeing in the worst light, misconstruing words and actions, and talking mere suppositions, leaving brethren to God who sees every word, thought, motive and wayward heart, enthroning Jesus, and showing mercy, tenderness, compassion and love.
Drawing nigh means awaking out of sleep and being aroused to know what is close upon us in earth's history, and if all would do this many souls would be saved. God does not separate from His people, but they separate themselves by their own course, and Satan's work of alienation and division separates brethren from one another and more than this separates them from God, at this perilous time an offense to God and peril to souls. Cherishing jealousy and hatred toward brethren and turning warfare weapons against them are sins greater in His sight than any other, and many are spiritually blind and deaf like the Jews in Christ's day, never having eyes opened nor understanding, the blind in mind leading the blind. Drawing nigh is done by fearing to sin by injustice to brethren, fearing to offend His children, refusing to wound or bruise His heritage or handle reputations offensively, eating and practicing the Word, hoping in mercy for sinners, and showing tenderest interest for all for whom Christ died, whom God loves and delights in as in others.
The call rebukes divided business loyalty through Satan's successive devices to catch the soul by fascinating money-making prospects that separate from God and allure from diligence to Him and from given duty and teaching work. Resisting causes departure, and coming close causes coming close in acceptance, requiring stopping where one is, refusing to sell or bind soul, body, and spirit even to get free from debt, and surrendering without reservation to run the race with patience for the crown of life. The purified heart by receiving rich grace keeps love of truth in the soul and produces high-souled integrity and equity in transactions, instead of taking on too many responsibilities and cares that exhaust physical and mental strength and drive that love out.
Inward and outward cleansing of hands and heart is shown in kind, patient, courteous, forbearing conduct at home, separating from sin and overcoming through earnest effort and reliance on merits. Right-doing brings peace and holy joy, while sin brings darkness and bondage, and a family should seek together in humility with confession and turning to make way for forgiveness, healing, and restored trust. Those unprepared to live peacefully with families are unprepared to join the family around the great white throne. Preserving loving family and Christian bonds belongs to drawing near and resisting so he flees, by breaking coldness and indifference at once and casting care on Jesus so His love fills the heart, for time is too short to give the devil room, living for the next world, faithful at any cost, seeking His glory and storing treasure in heaven. Drawing nearer to God and heaven and moving forward in faith means seeking closer relationship expressed in sincere love and deeper care for fellow believers.
Drawing near means turning from known sin and seeking sincerely, cleansing conduct and purifying the heart from double-mindedness. Outward righteousness or speaking about Christ without experiencing His power cannot keep from temptation, and His atoning sacrifice is the only hope yet avails nothing while known sins are cherished and while heart, attention, and desires turn to worldly pleasures rather than God. It requires humble surrender and thorough moral cleansing by putting away evil thoughts, actions, old habits, and evil speech, pleading while Christ pleads, being purified from every unrighteous thought and unholy action, making entire surrender of body, soul, and spirit, giving up cherished self-righteousness, humbling with diligent thorough work, dying to self and living to God, and ascending heavenward round by round not in human strength but in Christ's strength, using the light of the day of mercy to gather every divine ray and learn soul-saving.
Truth must be received into the heart and not left in the outer courts as mere assent or outward service of Christ and the world at once, since no one can serve both. Received truth produces refinement of taste, sanctified judgment, kindness, patience, long-suffering, mercy and tender compassion, overcoming hasty temper and coarse, rough, discourteous ways, mastering stamped depravity through persevering effort as a student in Christ's school, creating a different spiritual atmosphere and turning the heart from selfishness. Drawing near means learning meekness and lowliness and putting away evil speaking, bearing patiently in love and preserving unity of the Spirit in peace. It means turning from evil suspicions and accusations, seeking clean heart and pure mind, and repenting by confessing wrongs and asking forgiveness from those wronged.
Drawing nigh is done by fearing to sin by injustice to brethren, fearing to offend His children, refusing to wound or bruise His heritage, hoping in mercy for sinners with tender interest for all for whom Christ died, and refusing to handle reputations offensively when personal ideas are not exalted, because God loves them as He loves us and takes as much pleasure in them as in us. Each Christian's drawing near is individual work that brings believers near one another in the oneness prayed for between Father and Son; keeping it respects and carries out every word of that prayer in thoughts, words, and actions and causes rejoicing among the heavenly host. Drawing near places in close connection instead of brooding over troubles, producing healthy growth, rooting and building up in Christ, pressing together with differences adjusted, looking to Christ and living. It brings people closer to one another through desire, silent prayer, resistance, placing will on God's side, and sincere prayer for deliverance bringing strength for the day, joined with working in unity rather than setting out alone with His influence and self-control. The nearer people come to Him the nearer they come to harmony, unity, and holiness, and becoming one with Christ leads to unity in holy fellowship.
Drawing near means yielding the whole heart, seeking forgiveness for personal sins and sanctification through belief in truth, surrendering all, laying self on the altar, and learning from the Great Teacher. His nearness felt through the Holy Spirit's control, molding, and fashioning to the divine likeness leads to likeness to God, deep desire for holiness, higher standard, becoming all light with God living and reigning within, Christ's Spirit working through, words testifying and life witnessing to truth. It means giving the heart's best and holiest affections, with daily consecration, faith, humility, heart-searching and removal of what obstructs the Spirit, gaining victory through Christ with strengthening against the enemy and response of praise. Coming near means letting self decrease and Christ increase, putting me and I in place, lifting Jesus and talking of Jesus, making Him foundation of all plans, keeping the eye single to glory, obeying all requirements, and keeping eternal realities in view, with loss if lacking. Those who draw near receive the all-sufficient Helper to carry them and burdens so burdens do not oppress and no more is taken than can be borne pleasantly and kindly, wear the easy yoke gracefully with Jesus bearing the heavy end, humble at every step and let Jesus lift up instead of exalting self unto abasement, labor together with God with divine help at every step, and live in the world without being of it, pure in heart, full of kindness, doing justice, loving mercy, walking humbly. Drawing near means continually seeking and learning His will, becoming less like the world and more like Christ in an elevated life of communion, purity, and holiness that raises above the world's low level rather than bringing down to it. It means living near in sweet communion that preserves strength and keeps faith from failing, requiring separation from the world and not mingling, because mingling causes loss of strength.
Summons to Workers Church
Ministers and instructors must first be converted, humbled and sanctified before safely teaching others, with conduct made clean and hearts made sincere rather than divided, integrity and truth within renewing the mind and transforming the whole life through close self-examination, heart conversion and true repentance. Drawing near involves confession, humility and prayer in daily experience with sanctifying truth, and when the way is cleared the Spirit comes, while distance leaves uncertainty how to exercise faith, and the converting power that comes by coming close is what an unsafe preacher needs for present and eternal good. Those engaged in the sacred work of giving the last solemn warning must have pure hearts and clean hands by carefully living out in life the principles of the truth they handle.
Ministering brethren draw near to receive rich blessing now by grasping promises, putting self out of sight that Jesus may appear, letting self and the will die into God's will, surrendering the will and being cleansed from every defilement, and then God melts over them, fills them with power and works through them. Coming near means fleeing to Jesus in living faith, taking hold of His strength and making peace with Him rather than complaining over unsuccessful labor or craving human praise. Coming close brings God close in return and is the only hope for the baptism of the Holy Spirit and great blessings, which the Father first tests whether life can be lived without dishonoring Him, and they do not come by mere asking nor to those supposing they already have all needed help, but by meeting conditions God laid down. As James and John had to wear Christ's yoke and daily learn meekness and lowliness before sharing His glory, so nearness requires that yoke and daily learning, obeying and honoring law, running the race and fighting battles with the cross before the crown, finding rest because His yoke is easy and burden light, with salvation to the uttermost for all who come.
Missionaries in every far-off country draw near to work unselfishly in fear and love, staying connected, coming with full assurance of faith, lifting holy hands without wrath or doubting, with eye single to God's glory and making Him dependence and trust instead of human wisdom. When they do, God draws near by making known His pleasure, giving wisdom, verifying promises, enabling much for His work and richest experience in doing it, while other methods make blunders, and those meeting difficulties in new fields draw nigh assured He is the Father with no variableness nor shadow of turning, working for His people on the Pacific Coast as they come near through living faith. To cooperate, teachers and students fit themselves by drawing near and He draws near, seeking knowledge, skill, wisdom and understanding like Daniel and his fellows, not in weak ability but seeking God, resisting the devil, turning from sin and practicing obedience. This includes a carefully studied plain simple nutritious solid diet nourishing body, digestion, brain and nerves for hard vigorous thinking, choosing moral discipline and self-control, thorough character building and self-examination through which God reveals needed work.
Teachers must every day first draw near to God to learn from Christ and then draw near to students, and this order makes possible a very precious work. Diligent humble drawing near brings a daily gift of knowledge and aptitude to teach for imparting received blessings, carrying students over knowledge with deep earnest interest, coming as close as possible with Christ's love and gentleness abounding, keeping out harsh domineering mastery. Those leaving school place themselves daily under watchcare, never supposing sufficiency to be wise and good alone but committing souls to His keeping, treasuring impressions when Scripture was opened in distinct clear light, guarding against imperfect education of true Christian manliness and womanliness that causes failure and fall. They remain open and steadfast despite unpopularity and opposition.
Holy gatherings and camp-meetings are precious opportunities to draw near and receive blessing and the Spirit's abiding by improving the privilege, searching the heart, comparing life and character with divine law, putting away hindrances, beginning aright, shunning Sabbath violation, preparing all needful things on Friday, refusing own pleasure and convenience to honor the Creator. Clean hands and pure heart matter more than outward appearance, so differences and conflicts are put right that home and heart be ready, assembling to seek God, learn His will, and pursue strength and blessing through humble prayer and searching Scripture. Seeking together invites nearness and blessing, hoped to bless the gathered day, in prayer and spiritual labor, asking cleansing from sin and healing of backsliding and forgetfulness, restored to obedience, prayer, faithful work and teaching children to follow the Lord. Wholehearted seeking through humbling, prayer, repentance and seeking the Spirit is expressed in praise, mutual love and faithful service, and when believers pray together He draws near and blesses, even in small meetings of two or three workers praying with and instructing the ignorant in house or outdoors with welcome, song, and simple clear explanation, God with workers and hearers to impress and bring into truth.
Coming near with humble hearts to glorify Him in every act requires honest dealing in health-food work, forbidding borrowing or stealing business others built, taking secrets of special foods to manufacture and sell for profit, or falsely claiming harmony with originators. Elders and officers are called to draw nigh now in probationary time with entireness and wholeness of purpose, humbling hearts, laying hold by faith on Christ's grace, putting away sins, believing repentance accepted, showing piety, devotion and love for souls, learning and practicing Christ's lessons until ascending high places of faith for clearer spiritual view, carrying burden and care, arousing with earnest prayer and determined effort to set the church to work. Those in influence must decide to be wholly on the Lord's side by putting away evil works and coming near in repentance and conversion, a reformation going through the congregation beginning with the most responsible and each man in his house teaching truth, shown without delay in well-ordered lives, godly conversation, heart given for service and conformity to Christ's will. Workers separated by peculiar theories are called to change attitude and return.
Drawing near brings God's nearness and His keeping of what is committed, meaning in crisis when some depart to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils to remain faithful rather than join those leading astray. It means decided separate stand from determined shipwreck of faith, refusing to sell the Lord at any price, refusing to listen to or examine sophistries, leaving foundations and pillars of present truth unmoved, refusing links with hypnotism, bearing plain testimony against leading astray. Those coming nigh in service, especially leaders in America supposing the General Conference voice to be God's voice, must become one with God before uttering opinions, emptied of self, opening the heart's door to the heavenly Guest, looking to no man as God, and when consecrated, cleansed and purified, approaching nearer the divine benevolence, they can voice God's commission and be respected.
Everyone connected with God's work, including publishing houses at Washington, Nashville and Mountain View, must draw near the whole day long and nearer than ever before by talking with God and learning His will and way with gratitude, and He gives tact and skill to those working for His glory. For Washington workers, humbly walking brings sight of salvation and knowledge of the grace of Christ who understands those not keeping commandments, done by fasting and prayer, humbling self, cleansing heart from impurity, confessing sins, pleading day and night for victory. Sanitarium workers drawing near have Him draw near, and all at Boulder are called to sit at His feet and learn, living in spirit, word and deed to give the enemy no occasion, standing in the Mighty One's strength that chases a thousand and puts ten thousand to flight. Workers for Nashville must draw near in trust with cleansed soul, humbling, cleansing from iniquity, converted to the Lord's way, putting on Christ's righteousness, and with belief, faith and courage His salvation is revealed.
Dr. Russell must turn rather than continue in unbelief, for drawing near gives spiritual strength to overcome, but neglecting mercy and refusing light loses hold on God and perishes with the unbelieving. When Dr. Kellogg draws near, God will draw near, the way toward restored fellowship. Drawing near involves consecrating self and earnestly seeking salvation, as Uriah and Harriet could receive salvation by seeking and devoting themselves wholly to God's work, their marriage not displeasing if everything was consecrated and His Spirit and power sought. As Brother Faulkhead separated from the secret society and advanced in righteousness, God strengthened every step, strengthening each advancing step in righteousness. Brother Santee is urged to draw nearer to Jesus, keep drawing closer and hide in God.
Drawing near means approaching by living faith and laying hold of promises, God ready to bless, belonging with taking Christ's yoke and serving others by sharing truth, speaking personally and praying for them. This brings Christ's grace into view and equips through convicting power to lead sinners to conversion. Coming close bringing God close is the condition for successful soul-work, for finite methods and multiplicity of human plans cannot succeed nor keep religion alive, but letting God work by His conditions, plans and ways brings life-giving power from Christ as vital forces from living vine to grafted branch to flourish and bear fruit to God's glory. Drawing near is also the work in reaching hearers, relying on the Spirit to draw them, the foundation of all soul-work to be done unitedly by prayerfully studying principles under the Spirit for right views of privilege and responsibility worked out in experience. For leaders it means lifting the heart, confessing defects, pleading for higher standard, only thus discerning need and seeking higher attainments.
Drawing near brings God near with influence, self-control and steadiness to one unsettled and tempted to strike out alone into unappointed strange work, done not alone but linked with brethren pulling together. It means putting away differences and desire for supremacy, coming close in fellowship, praying intensely for fitness to meet men and speak words in daily intercourse leading sinners to Christ, realizing the privilege of close association with Christ and grieving slowness and failure to learn lessons for good. Coming near brings closeness in which God can safely use one as instrument for glory and saving souls. Those recognizing need and drawing near find Him drawing near, then used as channels to awaken the indifferent to seek Him, joined to earnest faith holding promises, living presented truth, praying and obeying. Workers must draw near to obtain Spirit and abundant grace then work for souls, having more of God and far less of self, charged with Spirit so even the weakest wins souls including great men by gospel simplicity not human power.
The promise applies to sharing truth so returnees and former churchgoers saying they receive no benefit in their churches are drawn through truth and the Spirit. Drawing near calls for more than half-hearted experience, keeping zeal and ambition undiminished but wisely directed, guarding where past failure occurred, fearing circumstances inviting repetition, since each fall eases the next. Temptation by God's appointment brings special gracious influence of the Spirit to resist, meet difficulties and overcome, recorded as Overcomer, while warfare against brethren goes alone without the Father of light in own strength to defeat. It is appeal to remain firm in true principles amid trials in the Lord's work. Drawing near requires meek childlike spirit without lifting up, humbling before God lest He humble, for impulsive action without considering every side and wisest course shows lack of humility and brings confusion. It means becoming a fool in own estimation, humble contrite meek lowly self-denying, to whom God gives wisdom hidden from worldly-wise self-sufficient, revealing to babes, laying pride in dust, tenderly regarding and truly exalting daily learners, laying aside fleshly reasoning in humility and reverence.
Drawing near means becoming laborers together with Him with self hid in Christ, believing faith at every step while acknowledging weakness without faithlessness, using moral powers and religious susceptibilities, for without nearness weakness and mistakes mark everything and little can be expected managing God's interests humanly, but with it all is wrought in God. It means exercising faith and working courageously as directed, trusting goodness and expecting blessing, in faith and dependence not own strength and plans. Drawing near means turning from self-importance and human plans to rely on God and let Christ guide work and heart, refusing human wisdom, trusting the Lord, constantly looking to Jesus, eating His flesh and drinking His blood by freely partaking of the tree of life. Such walk in light with heart and mind under God's supervision, nothing prevailing, no wrong remaining, standing on eternal rectitude as more than conquerors, words seasoned with grace and Christ's peace ruling.
He becomes wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption to those feeling need who accept invitation to come, take His yoke and learn meekness and lowliness necessary to advance in His work. Bearing His yoke and lifting burdens brings rest, consciousness of presence vanishing doubts, while turning to erring humans loses power, but returning through Christ with entire daily dependence in learning keeps from mistakes. By faith and works in drawing near they declare Him wisdom, sanctification and righteousness, coming nearer to harmony, unity and holiness, learning genuine religion of one mind and judgment keeping law as love to God and man, even disappointment and suffering sanctifying to work out His will. Drawing near is everyday work of subduing the natural heart and bringing the will into subjection, and as people do angels draw near to strengthen for duties. God wants the close to be living examples enjoying light of countenance and refreshing presence, moving right in large field with few laborers enduring privations to advance work, resisted temptation teaching flight to Christ, growing gradually as blade then ear then full grain to fit for eternal life.
Even when tempted to speak rashly, drawing near brings Him near, and trust in Christ cannot be broken by another, calling for restraint since unsettling Christ's family hurts Christ Himself. In criticism and trial refusing retaliation and discouragement makes room for nearness bringing love, peace, joy, clear understanding of truth and deeper appreciation of Christ's love. Remembering nearness everywhere, sensing angels sent to protect and help, keeping thoughts and conversation on heavenly things and God's love, compassion and mercy brings Him near and Satan draws apart from pure ennobling themes, resulting in careful words and actions pleasing God and representing Christ. Drawing near is prayer and reliance on the Word amid danger. It requires surrendering will, genuine repentance, renouncing what God condemned, radical heart change, changing leaders from Satan to God, building on the Rock not sand with undivided wholehearted surrender and obedience, without justifying past wrong imperiling the cause. Only thus is victory, conviction, conversion without pretense, seeing self in Calvary's light, supplied from Christ's fullness with standard lifted against the enemy.
Coming forward openly to seek the Spirit and deeper faith with decided public witness and cleansing from moral defilement, selfishness and idols is proper not shameful, bringing humility, contrition and purifying influence of faith working by love, strengthening faith and encouraging others, seeking with humble sincere heart. Arising and coming in faith unites strength to help the church. The verse appeals for close fellowship as part of true conversion, using time and gifts, putting knowledge to work, keeping drawing near and seeking Christ's Spirit and presence within, bringing peace and reflecting Jesus, a continuing pursuit of God and deeper truth preparing to share it. In the shaking it calls God's people to keep eyes upward, plead with strong agonizing persevering faith resisting surrounding darkness, cleanse hands and purify hearts, and He draws near as Jesus sends light encouraging hearts and lighting faces, while indifferent careless making no effort are shut in as thick cloud and left. In that separation believers keep it by stillness before God not much talk, answering His cords of love, remaining kind patient self-respectful whatever opinions, turning test into blessing.
Drawing near joined with resisting makes the devil flee, renewed day by day through knowing the Lord, growing faith and holiness keeping first love fresh, neglect losing it and removing the candlestick. God's people must pray, humble hearts and draw nigh to see clearly, with heart-humiliation by those entrusted with great truth, receiving and believing truth purifying life, words and works from selfishness and emulation, loving as brethren with tenderness, kindness on lips, refusing variance pleasing Satan while guilty world perishes. Drawing near means walking humbly through fasting and prayer, humbling self, cleansing heart from impurity, confessing sins, pleading day and night for victory over sin and weakness, and those doing so see salvation and know the all-sufficient Helper understanding weakness. It means seeking help to prepare mind and body to fulfill duties rightly, not letting appetites and passions govern but controlling them in harmony with God, seeking, praying and giving heart's best affections, God giving children strength to remain faithful when Satan leads astray.
Drawing near means turning in earnest repentance and continuing in fellowship not separating again, turning from self to Christ, surrendering self with worries, throwing away unbelief, taking faith, living by every word, confessing wrongs including injustice and making them right beginning with the harmed, removing burden Jesus bears, drawing nigh to one another in brotherly love while He intercedes. It means seeking closeness allowing His Spirit to govern every motive and action, living in constant dependence discerning temptations, leaving no room for self-sufficiency. Coming in faith trusting response, God knowing every weakness and suffering, hearing persevering petitions, welcoming the helpless with full assurance, pledging to fulfill His part when called upon with meeting conditions including obeying commandments and carrying directions in work for others. Drawing near means keeping close communion relying on grace so workers preserve fresh peaceful strength not exhausting through excessive preaching.
Drawing near brings assurance of reciprocal nearness, the newborn soul keeping learning to know the Lord bringing peace and assurance. Seekers may delight, grow in grace, wisdom and love, continue faithfully in well-doing sharing divine nature escaping corruption through lust, requiring truth on every point and holding confidence firm to the end, resting on given Son to redeem, becoming vessels unto honor fit for use. Each draws near with much prayer, humbling and confession of personal sins, searching heart and removing from thoughts, words and actions whatever separates, and as they humbly seek He makes Himself known and gives courage for service. Earnest drawing near seeks in prayer with full confession, putting away wrongs, praying in faith for Spirit's power to overcome as Christ overcame, reading and obeying Word, clearing way for Spirit to come and God to be glorified. It is done by humble simple self-denying followers walking softly, earnestly interceding, banishing sloth and lukewarmness, cherishing affection and humility, giving enlightenment, wisdom, efficiency and success representing Christ, diverse believers showing unity as branches of the Vine.
The departed are called to come near in humility warned of danger, unifying, standing in weakness as one with God, humbling, confessing from darkness to light, taking Christ by prayer and confession, forsaking sin, learning of Him, receiving grace to impart, putting on armor of righteousness, consecrating life and capabilities, clearing the King's highway, casting evil from heart in diligent repentance, whereupon His Spirit comes, service accepted, blessing beyond room to receive, standard lifted when enemy comes as flood. God's children draw nigh now becoming more after the Pattern in faithful practical duties giving correct representation and lesson, preparing nourishing food carefully, keeping neat and tidy, not neglecting physical work and exercise for much reading, restored to right doing not destroyed. God draws near to humble approach with holy awe for sacred majesty separate from the world, purity through Spirit's sanctifying and belief in truth, worship not treating sacred things carelessly nor following own ideas against known will, preserving gospel's elevated character not shaming Christ. Coming close in short time left refuses indifference, carelessness and selfishness, improves every capability for physical mental spiritual strength, wins souls bringing others close by uplifting noble pure example, honoring God with clear conscience, walking and working humbly with Christ's peace within, pledged doing His will understandingly, fitted for ministry teaching Word, reaching in consecration to bring lost sheep into the fold in word and action to His glory, waking to seek closeness before earnest remaining work.
A sinner walking humbly laying aside bitter feelings toward officers guarding the church and coming contrite in repentance has God draw near, pardoning even grievous sin wounding Christ by injuring His heritage, for He loves nor leaves, while cherished bitterness prevents blessing and turns His face away. Drawing nigh means fearing to sin by injustice to brethren, fearing to offend His children, refusing to wound His heritage, hoping in mercy for sinners with tender interest for all Christ died for, refusing to handle reputations offensively when personal ideas are not exalted, for God loves them as us and delights in them equally. Wholehearted seekers recognize His light and presence, and oneness brings riches of grace, walking in footsteps in love and sympathy, helping the needy, lifting hanging hands, strengthening feeble knees, directing souls in darkness to Him who gave life for the world into light, holding fast united safe in peril by power and grace. Drawing near means turning from sin in repentance, God cleansing defilement, confessing and forsaking separating wrongs making them right beginning with harmed person, turning from evil suspicions and accusations seeking clean heart and pure mind asking forgiveness of wronged.
Drawing near means rising above chilling unbelief with zeal, earnestness and fervency proportionate to light and privileges, and He draws nigh, belonging to helping youth by educating them to work for salvation, teachers thereby learning to labor more successfully as efficient agents for scholars' conversion, laying hold on Christ as efficiency with enlarged minds realizing eternal life and hearts softened by grace as true educators. It leads students to desire higher than amusement and partake of divine nature, beholding Jesus till amusements lose appeal, minds lifted striving to become like Him. Coming close means doing best by faith in Christ's strength in practical daily duties, learning by practice power of prayer and pure speech, Bible the one chart to heaven, assurance to help all within influence, requiring practical prayer and pure speech through Christ's strength. With daily living experience His drawing nigh comes through compassionate Savior giving light and life from Christ, fitting harmony to draw perishing souls. Constantly looking to Jesus, trusting, walking in light belongs to drawing near with God supervising heart and mind, encouraging trust, constant attention and humble walk, and as the end is nearer all on the Lord's side take position in true earnest with prayers ascending and faith clinging to Him mighty to save to the uttermost.
Turning in helplessness surrendering will to guidance brings Him near raising standard against the enemy, sanctified through truth, for God does not dwell in wicked soul. Drawing near means taking firm right position working in righteousness toward approvable character, full surrender opening mind to spiritual light and changed seeing. It means yielding seeking closer union, separating from associates hindering faith and joining God's people with interests and affections centered in Christ and followers. Coming close through love and obedience prepares to receive Christ when made known, and even without full faith believing prophecies looking for Messiah, believing one God Creator, revering, acknowledging authority, seeking counsel in all business, faithful in home and official duties, establishing family worship, refusing to plan or bear weighty responsibilities without His help, praying much earnestly, faith marking works, purity of actions and generosity causes God to regard and come close in word and Spirit, while rejecting given light brings condemnation.
