James 5:10
Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.
The prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord are set forth as the example of suffering affliction with patience. That patience means keeping the heart steady and free from resentment while waiting for the Lord's coming and judgment. The reviling and persecution they endured did not overthrow God's work, but through their affliction the knowledge of God was spread, and opposition served to bring truth before people to be examined. The instruction is to put biblical truth into daily practice rather than leaving it as mere knowledge. Its direction reaches even to sickness, calling the sick to act their part faithfully, trust God, and rely on Him to raise them up when that will bring glory to Him.
