Jeremiah 10:11
Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens. Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.
The appointed answer is given for God's people and the house of Israel to speak to followers of false gods, and with it comes the command not to learn the way of the heathen and not to fear or be dismayed at the signs in the sky as the heathen do. The gods that did not make the sky and the land are to be told that they will be destroyed from the land and will perish from the earth and from under the sky and the heavens.
The Lord alone stands in contrast as the true God, the living God and an everlasting King, the Creator and Ruler of all, while the gods that did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under and beneath the heavens. His anger and wrath shake the earth and make it tremble, and His judgment and indignation the nations cannot endure or abide. Only allegiance to this living God brings rest and peace.
Those rival gods are powerless to uplift or save and have no lasting power, whether as carved images or as teaching that denies God. They are only idols of wood and stone worshiped in blindness, brutish ignorance, falsehood and lies with no breath in them, empty vanity and mistaken work of errors. Every maker of them is dull and put to shame by his carved and cast image, and they are to be destroyed at the time of reckoning and visitation.
The true God is the One who made the land and earth by power, established and set the world firm by wisdom, and spread out and stretched the sky and heavens by understanding and discretion, and who made and sustains all things. He commands the multitude of waters above, causes vapors to rise from the ends of the earth, makes lightning with rain, and brings wind from His storehouses. The heavens with the sun giving life and beauty and the moon and stars as works of His hands declare the glory of their Maker and show His superiority as the God that made the heavens and the earth.
The Portion of Jacob is unlike idols, for He forms and is the former of all things, and Israel belongs to Him as His inheritance and rod, the Lord of hosts is His name. He is a personal, living Creator and not merely an impersonal power working through nature. Nature reveals His character, power and glory, but nature itself is not God and is not to be worshiped, and the Creator rather than what He created is to be exalted.
Inability to create exposes the false gods, while the Creator alone has the right to reverence and worship. The same distinction is proved by the Sabbath and the fourth commandment, which point to His making heaven and earth, the sea and all in them in six days and resting and blessing the seventh day. The Sabbath is therefore His seal, sign and memorial of creative power and authority, identifying the Creator and distinguishing Him from false gods, a continuing witness to His existence, greatness, wisdom, love and holiness. Recognizing Him as Creator and as the Maker of heaven and earth means also seeing His wisdom and holiness in His law, which reflects His character.
Those who claim to be Christians and profess truth and to believe the truth, yet drink from polluted springs and fountains of unbelief and infidelity and by teaching, precept and example pull and draw others away from pure waters, the cold snow-waters of Lebanon, are fools even while calling and professing themselves wise.
