They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
They are emptiness without worth, false and mistaken things made by human error, and that includes the heathen ways and infidel teachings built up around them. There is no life in them, no breath and no power of their own. Set against the living God who made and upholds heaven and earth, they are powerless objects beside the Creator.
The time of their visitation is God's visiting them in judgment, the appointed time of reckoning. At that time they shall perish and come to nothing. That doom stands in contrast to the Lord as the true God, the living God and everlasting King, who made the earth by power and wisdom and sustains the heavens and the earth. His wrath shakes the earth, He governs the waters and brings the lightnings and wind, and as the Portion of Jacob and the former of all things He endures while false gods perish.
The same emptiness marks those who claim to be Christians and profess truth yet drink from polluted fountains of infidelity. By teaching and example they draw others away from the pure cold waters of truth. Though they call themselves wise, they are shown to be fools.
