Jeremiah 10:18
For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so. For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.
Jeremiah 10:18 belongs to Jeremiah's prophecies of warning to the Jews against sin and of judgment upon his people. It declares that God would suddenly and forcibly sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once and drive them into distress. That distress was inflicted so that they may find it so, meaning they would recognize the truth of what had happened to them. The punishment was fulfilled through Babylon's swift invasion because of Israel's sin.
In its chapter setting the verse stands amid a contrast between idols and heathen worship and the true God, whose distinguishing characteristics are the power to create and the work of creation. The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth shall perish, while the portion of Jacob is the Former of all things. Because creative power thus distinguishes the true God, the creation Sabbath is his sign or memorial of the exercise of that power.
