Jeremiah 10:3
For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
The verse stands as part of a divine warning not to learn the way of the heathen and not to be dismayed or afraid at their signs. The customs of the peoples are declared vain and empty in themselves. That emptiness lies in this, that their gods are cut as a tree out of the forest and shaped by the hands of a workman with the axe, made by human hands from wood. Against these handmade idols stands the living God, who created the world and who sustains it.
