Jeremiah 10:9
Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men. Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.
Jeremiah 10:9 stands within a warning not to put trust in the gods of the heathen and the idols they manufacture. The gods it exposes are false and lifeless, mere products of human hands set in opposition to the living God who made the world and sustains it. The idol described is built from costly silver and gold and dressed in blue and purple by skilled workmen, yet expense of material and cunning of craftsmanship cannot make it divine. It remains an artificial thing, fashioned and clothed by men, with no life or godhead in itself. Such idol-gods are vanity, empty of truth and power, and they will perish.
