Jeremiah 11:4
Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Obey my voice, and do them, according to all which I command you: so shall ye be my people, and I will be your God:
The verse looks back to the covenant commanded to the fathers in the day they were brought out of the land of Egypt, out of the iron furnace, requiring them to obey God's voice and to do according to all He commanded them. Obedience was the stated condition on which they would be His people and He would be their God. Disobedience to that covenant brought a curse. The same covenant carried God's oath to the fathers to give them a land flowing with milk and honey. God earnestly protested to urge that obedience, rising early to press it upon them.
Yet Israel broke its promise to do all that God spoke. They did not obey nor incline the ear, but each one walked in the imagination of his evil heart by following his own impulses. Because they did not fulfill what they had promised, they did not receive the blessings God wished to bestow upon them. By following their own impulses they disqualified themselves from being recognized as His peculiar treasure.
