Jeremiah 12:4
How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end. How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.
This cry belongs to a part of Jeremiah's book that warns the Jews. Because of the wickedness of those living in it, the land itself is left mourning, the plants of every field wither, and the beasts and the birds are swept away. Human guilt thus brings suffering not only on people but on the ground, its vegetation, and its animals and birds.
Those who do this evil deny that their conduct will meet an end in judgment. They dismiss the prospect of being called to account, insisting that God will not see how their lives turn out.
