Jeremiah 12:6

For even thy brethren, and the house of thy father, even they have dealt treacherously with thee; yea, they have called a multitude after thee: believe them not, though they speak fair words unto thee.

After the great disappointment the voice of the Lord to His disappointed people was a command not to believe those who had not held fast their faith and experience yet presented every conceivable opinion as the message of truth. Even brethren and a man's own household can deal treacherously while speaking pleasantly and calling a multitude to follow, so belief is to be withheld despite fair speech.

The command is to reject those who claim to have a message that the Seventh-day Adventist church is Babylon and that God's people must come out of her, even when they appear sincere and honest and present reasons with kind speech. God has not sent them and decided light has been given against their message, so their message carries no weight and must be rejected whenever such a claim is repeated. The warning applies to self-appointed proclaimers of the loud cry who accuse the church, declare its leaders will fall through self-exaltation and be replaced by humble men who will do wonderful things, set a time for probation to close, claim to believe the testimonies and use them to give force and appearance of truth to their claims, and present spurious visions as divine.

Belief is also forbidden toward those who present supposed new light with fair, flattering words, even when they seem zealous, stirred with new life and inspired and their reasoning from Scripture seems without flaw. Their message is truth mixed with error misapplied from Scripture, such as fixing 1894 for the close of the Lord's work, and it leads into strange paths, confuses minds and causes some to give up the faith. This repeats the stumbling of the Jews who wove truth and error into a fabric that looked beautiful to them and so rejected the pure true light Christ came to give. Intelligence, pleasant manner, zeal, earnestness, self-denial, and an appearance of consecration and devotion do not prove divine sending, for such messengers are not sent by God and bear no divine credentials, their inspiration is of Satan, and their work deceives the unwary and leads to fanaticism, dishonesty and failed predictions. Resistance to Satan's deceptive reasoning belongs to watching and praying in order not to enter temptation, by not believing or entertaining the thoughts he presents to the mind, refusing to accept evil as good, thinking the best of others rather than thinking evil of them or making the worst appear, refusing to believe hearsay about associates, and using words to preserve good qualities and destroy evil.
