Jeremiah 12:7

I have forsaken mine house, I have left mine heritage; I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies.

In the verse “my soul” means God himself. Giving the dearly beloved of his soul into the hand of her enemies therefore means giving those he loved into their enemies’ hands. It does not refer to an immortal part separate from God, but is expressed by a personal pronoun for himself.

Forsaking his house and leaving his heritage pictures abandoning his professed, beloved people and heritage to their enemies and bringing them under Gentile rule. He did this in judgment for their unfaithfulness, willfulness and idolatry. By adopting its idolatrous practices they had spiritually united themselves with Babylon. That spiritual union was followed by visible overthrow and captivity in Babylon’s swift invasion. Israel’s kingdom passed to Babylonia, and the people were sent to live under foreign rule.
