Jeremiah 12:9

Mine heritage is unto me as a speckled bird, the birds round about are against her; come ye, assemble all the beasts of the field, come to devour.

God's heritage is unto Him as a speckled bird, with the birds round about against her, surrounding her and setting upon her. Those who faithfully obey the Lord become conspicuous by that obedience, standing out as distinct signs in Israel and a wonder to the world around them. That distinctness brings contempt, opposition and hostility from the people around them. Their course springs from conscience and obedience to God's word, though it is called oddness or deliberate eccentricity.

Sabbath keepers who obey the Lord are like those speckled birds among hostile birds. So too is one who is the only Adventist in the family and feels different from those around her, belonging to that heritage set upon by the birds around it. To be different from the world in this way is a cross to endure for Christ.
