Jeremiah Hides the Linen Girdle in a Rockby KalebRosendahl

Jeremiah 13:2

So I got a girdle according to the word of the LORD, and put it on my loins.

The section from Jeremiah 12 to 24 consists of warnings to the Jews, and this verse stands within them as one of the book's striking symbols and signs and figures of speech by which God's message is given. In obedience to the word of the Lord Jeremiah literally obtained a linen girdle and put it on his loins. The obtaining and wearing was a prophetic object lesson. The act shows that God gives attention to details that people may consider small, including the prescribed form of dress.

The girdle put on the loins was the girdle of Judah, the same kind of eastern girdle still worn in the Holy Land. Customs of dress there never change. That girdle may still be met any day in the streets of Jerusalem, a witness to the marvelous accuracy of the word.
