Jeremiah 13:22

And if thou say in thine heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare.

The passage stands among the warnings addressed to the Jews found in Jeremiah 12 to 24. It answers the inward question of the heart asking why these things have come upon the people, declaring that they have come because of the greatness of iniquity. That greatness of iniquity brings calamity upon Judah, with suffering and humiliation as its result.

The uncovering of the skirts and the laying bare of the heels portray exposure and punishment, the shame and humiliation brought upon the people by their sin. That iniquity was disobedience to God's commandments, forsaking His law set before them, failing to obey His voice and to walk therein, but walking instead after the imagination of the heart and after Baalim. Although God had promised the land of Canaan on condition of obedience, setting before them a blessing if they obeyed and a curse if they turned to other gods, they persisted in willful sin despite repeated warnings and called the curse down upon themselves, so that God drove them from the land and scattered them among the heathen and they lost national existence. As such a warning, the passage is peculiarly applicable to the present day.
