Jeremiah 13:27
I have seen thine adulteries, and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom, and thine abominations on the hills in the fields. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! wilt thou not be made clean? when shall it once be? I have seen thine adulteries, and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom, and thine abominations on the hills in the fields. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! wilt thou not be made clean? when shall it once be?
Jeremiah 13 belongs among the prophecies in which Jeremiah denounced the sins of the Jews and warned them of coming judgment. Within those warnings, Jeremiah 13:27 sets forth the unfaithfulness, idolatry, and abominations of Jerusalem as shameless sin, pictured in vivid figures of speech as adulteries, neighings, lewd whoredom, and abominations seen on the hills in the fields. It is at the same time an expression of sorrow over the transgression of his people.
It closes with a plaintive appeal and call for Jerusalem to be made clean and to return to God, asking when cleansing shall once come. The mass of the people did not respond to that call to return. Their shameless sin, so exposed, was soon to be punished by Babylon.
