Jeremiah Finds the Ruined Linen Girdleby emmanuel_higgins

Jeremiah 13:6

And it came to pass after many days, that the LORD said unto me, Arise, go to Euphrates, and take the girdle from thence, which I commanded thee to hide there.

In its setting, the verse stands in chapters 12 to 24, which warn the Jews. It is part of the account in which Jeremiah was directed to wear a linen girdle and then hide it until it rotted. The girdle hidden at Euphrates was a real girdle of a kind whose fashion in the East never changes. That same kind of girdle can still be seen any day in the streets of Jerusalem, witnessing together with other Bible garments to the marvelous accuracy of the word.

As such it belongs to the book's striking symbols, signs, and figures of speech. God gave this object lesson deliberately. The account shows that God takes notice of what people may consider small matters. Its warning and appeal, together with the book's assurances of the heavenly Father's kindness and everlasting love, apply especially to the present day.
