Jeremiah 14:13
Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place. Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.
Jeremiah 14:13 records what the false prophets told the people, that they would not see the sword, meaning war, nor suffer famine, but would have assured peace in this place or land. Those assurances were lies spoken in God's name, for he had neither sent nor commanded the prophets who gave them. Their message came from false visions and divinations and the deceit of their own hearts. Even where the promise was stated briefly as safety from sword and famine, it was still understood as false and not given by God.
The comforting promise contradicted God's warning of judgment and danger. It denied the coming trouble when sword and famine threatened, promised peace where God had not promised it, and gave the people a false sense of security. Claims of lasting peace in this sense contradict God's warning that wars will continue. Such preaching seduces and misleads by withholding warning of danger, judgment, and sin. It fails to reprove sin, pleases the unconverted mind, perverts Scripture and keeps people ignorant of truth, and leads them away from God and his word.
The verse applies to preachers who put the evil day far off and proclaim a future of peace and plenty.
