Jeremiah 14:16
And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.
Jeremiah's warning belongs to the message that Israel's idolatry and willfulness would bring swift punishment through Babylon. The judgment pronounced upon the people is part of that threatened punishment. It is directed against those who followed false prophecies, threatening them with death by famine and the sword. They would be left dead and cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, with no one remaining to bury them, neither for themselves nor for their wives, sons, and daughters.
This destruction comes because their own wickedness is poured back upon them. What befalls them is not arbitrary but the return of their iniquity upon their own heads. In this it foreshadows the final plagues, when the iniquity of the wicked will likewise fall upon them. At that time the righteous will be separated from the wicked and shielded from the plagues while judgment rests upon the ungodly.
