Jeremiah 14:7
O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name’s sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee. O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name’s sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.
The verse is a confession that iniquities testify against the people, that backslidings are many, and that they have sinned against God. It is made by the prophet for himself as well as for his people. Joined to that confession is a plea for forgiveness and for God to act for the sake of His own name, an appeal grounded in His character and mercy.
When He pardons and saves sinners He makes His righteous character known and vindicates it before the universe. The prayer also expresses earnest longing for the promised Deliverer. In a time of crisis it gives ground for faith as God's people humble themselves, confess sin, consecrate themselves anew, and trust Him to deliver His cause from reproach.
