Jeremiah 16:2

Thou shalt not take thee a wife, neither shalt thou have sons or daughters in this place.

The command not to marry nor to raise sons or daughters in that place falls within the morning portion that runs from the third chapter of Jeremiah through the twenty-first. That larger section is marked by a meaning that stands out with clarity. It sounds terrible condemnations of wrongdoing, expresses heartfelt grief over the transgression of the people, and makes tender calls to turn back to God. Those calls are met with complete unresponsiveness from the great body of the people.
