Jeremiah 16:21
Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The LORD. God will this once cause people to know His hand and His might, and to know that His name is the Lord. This knowing is not mere information but a compelled recognition of His power by those who have defied Him. Even defiance does not prevent that lesson, for He will make the defiant acknowledge Him as the Lord.
France in the French Revolution illustrates this making known of God. There the rejection of Christianity and of the Bible was followed by guilt and ruin and terrible consequences. Out of that suffering came recognition of guilt and of the need for faith in God and His Word. Faith in God and His Word was seen as the foundation of virtue and morality.
